Being a photographer is one of the few occupations where this fits.
Lets say I work at mcdonalds, I can't just take a picture of me serving people and then piss off and expect to get paid for it. Yet there seems to be a large majority of individuals in the entertainment industry who are quite content to want to do something once and then live the rest of their life off it.
These usually (although sometimes) aren't even the artists. Often it's just greedy middle-men who are just trying to get their fingers into the pie.
Don't you think it's kind of a little silly how copyright keeps getting extended? Why do you suppose that is? So artistic works don't end up back in the public domain, and so those with control of the rights can continue to profit off them.
Yeah I suppose. You're right. Survival of the fittest. I'm bigger than you and have more friends, so sucks to be you when I run you over with my huge fricken SUV that needs a direct connection to the oil well so it can guzzle as much fossil fuel as--
Okay, I'm drowning here. But wtf is with all these ball-less ACs. If you're gonna flame me the least you could do is have the balls to log in under your real account.
What you don't seem to understand is that there are a number of struggling artists who don't get the exposure they deserve because the MTV-music-in-a-can crowd drowns them out. I have friends in this situation.
It's not that they're not good enough, they just can't get the exposure they need. You need people to buy tickets to make money on a concert.
Is it just me or has companies like Apple managed to sneak DRM in under our noses while at the same time tricking us into thinking they're cool?
And really, 99c for a song isn't even that great of a deal. That makes a 15 song cd = $15.... Which essencially is the same price it was before. Not only that but you end up with an inflexible lossy-encoded file.
What really bothers me about this is how it floods the entire market and drowns out any independant artists who are actually giving away mp3's for free, while trying to make money by actually playing music. That's what most of us really want to see anyway -- the actual live band.
If you're not working you shouldn't get paid. I don't get paid for taking a picture of the work I did and then force-selling it over and over to idios at the mall.
Also I don't really think there's that much of a performance difference between NetBSD and OpenBSD. Although the latest release of Open I've tried is 3.3, so unless it got a lot slower...
Well I think Theo's attitude has reflected this because everyone wanting certain features weren't going to code any of it themselves.
So yes, his attitude was "I'm not going to code that feature for you because it doens't interest me.". But I'm pretty sure if anyone coded something good enough it would be accepted -- why wouldn't it be?
Play by the OpenBSD rules (no dumb licenses, etc), and write good code, and you can get your code into the official tree. If you write crappy code, or put a dumb license on it, then of course it's not going to be included.
Google's search results have been very poor lately.
In some searches 30% of the top 10 listings are other search directories -- or commercial services that simply do not have anything to do with the material being researched.
The URLs to these hits are usually formatted in a very peculiar manner -- basially your search string lowercased with underscores for spaces. So if I searched up "Dogs and Cats" I might get:
http://dogs.cats.com/dogs_and_cats.html
And if one goes to that page all they find is that it seems to be a placeholder/redirector for a commercial site that might not even be remotely connected to the original search.
Of course the search "Dogs and Cats" is just an example I used, it probably doesn't exhibit this behavior -- but I have noticed many searches that do.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already or not -- but I will do it anyway: I think it's important that the father of the ADHD daughter read a series of articles written by David Keirsey.
http://keirsey.com/dopefornowork.html
For those that don't know, David Keirsey is the author of "Please Understand Me" and "Please Understand Me II". Chances are if you've taken any MBTI tests in the last few years it is NOT an MBTI test, but rather the Keirsey Temperament Sorter.
He's against doping kids up on ritalin, and he of all people should know -- as he worked for 20 years as a clinical psychologist in public schools. However I encourage everyone to draw their own conclusions.
Heh.
It was a bad analogy because you failed to see the point -- not because it was untrue. I was only trying to prove that the GPL was viral, not that it was evil (which of course it is) -- I suppose I could have chosen a less severe or trivial virus, but AIDs is a good example of how the viral effect can be dangerous.
I thought it was a clever (and mildly humourous) analogy, however it seems few 'get' my sense of humour.
How old is this? 2 weeks? Didn't we already all complain about this 2 weeks ago?
Sure, ATI needs to get their act together, there's no excuse for attempted deception. However, if this is that BIG of a problem for you, then don't buy their hardware--or wait until they have produced half decent drivers. I was under the impression that they HAVE new drivers which don't do anything sneaky. (although I don't know if they're released yet)
Bottome Line: ATI is up against some tough competition--I don't think they're used to Nvidia's level of agression, so it's little wonder they're making some 'questionable' decisions.
In the end we all win--can you imagine a world with only Nvidia? and Intel? and Rambus? Yeah, I think we all know where that would lead.
Of course you have the numbers to back this up eh?
It's not a flawed analogy.

So the analogy is correct.

I'll proprietize your format.
Who says I don't?

Firstly, pf IS available on NetBSD.
PF Port for NetBSD 1.6.1Also I don't really think there's that much of a performance difference between NetBSD and OpenBSD. Although the latest release of Open I've tried is 3.3, so unless it got a lot slower...

Just searching for 'Linux Bug' on Google Groups retrieves over 845,000 queries .
*cough* TROLL *cough*

One might acquire AIDs through the act of sex, just as one might acquire GPL through the act of programming. Does anybody 'choose' to get AIDs?
