"There was one chapter in particular that reallystood out for me. This was the one where Mitnick told HIS side of the story - of the despair and frustration of being demonized in the media and locked away for five years. He told of his anger towards John Markoff, the New York Times reporter who wrote articles about Mitnick that seemed to demonize him and who later went on to write a book which turned into a movie - all while Mitnick languished in jail. I think in a way it was therapeutic for Mitnick to get his anger out at last and certainly about time that the public got to hear his words.

But these are words you WONT be hearing. Markoff's lawyers send the book publishers a threatening letter that was about as long as the chapter itself and Wiley is no longer printing that part of the book.(They claim to have reached this decision independantly)."

If anything, Linux teaches you how your computer works.. Sometimes the hard way. Still, I use Win2k for extra-cirruclar stuff (read games). Linux still isn't there and will probably stay that way for a while.

----Red Hat and Mandrake (which I name only because they seem to be the most visible in non-specialist stores) both produce distros which are relatively sane to install, and come with far (*far*) more extra-Operating System software included than the obvious conventional competitors do.

They're not even close to the earlier SuSE boxed kits. They "Only" had 6 cd's of shit. Usually, only 1/4'th of the tools actually worked. They didn't work well. When they finally went to "Pro edition" and "personal edition", I quit using them. However, Personal edition still meant 4 different types or word editing tools, 6 different emailers, 3 video players. None worked even mediocrely.

----Which brings on an optimstic rant:

----The included software with the usual distros varies a lot, by category and in quality. Saying that RH8 has x-jillion packages, though, is nice for exploring, but not helpful when the one thing a potential user would like to use is not among the x-jillion.

Microsoft got this down pat. "There is only one choice and one way. That way is with us".

At least, users wern't confused on how to do something. If they were, they could call over a neighbor and have them show it. There was never 20 million different ways to do something in Windows. Either thaey thought of it and made it a "feature" or "it didnt do that". Lack of choice is nicer for beginners and people who must use a computer.

----Such a beast would have to be simple, reliable, fast, pleasant, and with the ability to save to VCD/SVCD for DVD-player compatibility, and to DiVX;) or other free video format for long play. Wouldn't it be nice to have a complete toolkit for making low-budget video production using all free software?

It seems we already have a good encoding-decoding base. That code base is the MPlayer base. It can do all you said and more. Someone needs to create a gui and basic editor for it. My guess was that Avery Lee would have done it by now (they guy who does VirtualDub)

----(iMovie, though a well-made app and IMO sufficient reason for non Mac users to try out the Mac OS, does not make it easy -- and is it even possible? -- to create VCDs or DiVX;) disks.)

Nothing makes it easy to create correct (insert your color)-book VCD/SVCD standard mpegs. At least not what I've seen. Tsunami did make it easy, but I had quite a bit of crashes and other weird errors from going from .avi to (vcd)mpg
