I thought disclosure of MS's agreement concerning OEM os'es were corporate secret (blabla fines and revocation of contract). How can Gateway testify if they are bound by NDA's associated to the OEM contract?
Hell, maybe Gateway is realizing how much a pit Microsoft is when it comes to money. Or maybe it's MS's new contracting agreements ( if no upgrade within 1 year after new product comes out, owe full price).
It seems that MS is loosing its edge when it comes to controlling corporate powers. For the longest time, MS has made a standard (maybe not the best, but better than 10 types of hardware on 20 OS'es). We just have outgrown them.
Ack! If I remember correctly, there was an article about chips that could re-wire its own gates. Essentially it was self learning. Then there was a poster about that topic that mentioned a Hypercomputer (the OS learns at a fast rate).
Well, biological creatures don't scale well at all, right? We have access to the code that Rod Brooks made, right? Well, using other technology, lets evolove the code. If for some reason that doesn't work, we have most (all?) of the human genome done. How about other dna strings?
We either "evolove" the creature or we model it after the dna it came from. Anyways, score 1 for robotics.
You unknowingly brought up a good point. The Athlon PR rating is a great example of corporate Bull Shit. AMD was screaming and yelling when they broke the 1gHz barrier. Now they're stuck at something like 1433 mHz but they compare at 2.2 gHz P4. They just call thier chip Athlon 2200 XP.
note: even though I'm blasting Athlon and AMD, even an overclocked p4 at 3.5 gHz still can't beat a new Athlon. I'm just pissed that AMD does idiotic PR crap when thier prices and speeds sell thier chips.
Does anybody remember KOH (potassium hydroxide) virus? It was a boot sector program that would IDEA encrypt your hard disks and floppies. It was also set up so that if you take an encrypted floppy to a "uninfected" computer, a simple dir a: would then set up encryption (at a y/n prompt). Of if that is just considered a "user level app", how about CFS for linux?
Or StegFS?
Or even NTFS (as an earlier poster well... umm posted)?
What about a container partition (ScramDisk). Oh well.. I guess there's no prior art.
Duh. It skips. Or at worst, it messes up the track. CD heads dont touch the media, so they cant crash. And what do you think skip protection is? It's read-head crash protection (from jarring). Hard drives have bad problems with r/w head crashes, but cd's easily recover.
These things look sweet! I know they wont work in most car stereos since they're too thin. How much is it for a hundred of these things and are these cdr compatible? I want to burn these suckers and try them in my cd player in my car (cd player with tape adapter).
However, if they're like the business cd ripoffs, they'll charge a obscene price (1.5 to 2 X of normal cdr's). They'll rot on the shelf.
I'd check the ram. I've had a linux box that would crash (hard) after minutes of activity. Win2k seemed fine on it. Well, I used gdb to tetermine any soft of problem. nothing. I then finally did a test on the ram (by plugging 1 module at a time into another computer). The first chip (around 3 meg mark was corrupt). FreeBSD also was heavily hurt by this (the installer always crashed).
I use Mozilla as a browser about 100% of the time (aside from konqueror occaisionally). The program is stable. Check your hardware.
4 years to 1.00 Isn't good time? Well, what version is linux on? Oh my! we're only on stable 2.4.18 !! Well, thank goodness we can use Linux 7.2 ! Version numbers save us!!!!!
They're right, Gecko is pretty nice, but big deal. AoL is quite a large part of USA based ISP's but do you think EVERYBODY who has deviated from the de-facto standard of IE is going to change thier website so a bunch of AoL idiots can read it?
AoL's hated for a reason. Thier service doesnt require the brain power needed to use other ISP's. AoL users are generally regarded as morons. check out comp.security.misc sometimes. Compare AoL comments to non-AoL comments.
And this exact explanation of how new ideas emerges comes from the weirdest places sometimes. For example, a guy in Australia (grocery sacker) was an "engineer" in his spare time. Well, he created the worlds known fastest gun. The speed = 1,000,000 rounds per second using electronic ignition between propellant in a tube. Even Sandia National Labs bought rights (of what I know). Maybe he knew metalworking and thought he could make a better 'gun'. He did.
The best inventions aren't came up in stuffy "invent rooms" in government labs or corporation research projects... It's the people who actually do certain jobs day in and day out. After becoming experienced, they have an insight nobody else (other than friends in the field) can have.
And to compare, Linux was a hack job. Linus needed less restrictions on the source code. He started to hack away at the kernel, substituting things he thought was better.. In the end, look what he has built. He wasn't a lofty computer science professor or likewise, he was a student who thought he knew of a better way of implementing his OWN kernel.
Heh, with the amount of stupid spelling errors coupled with what seems to be the neo-hippie speak, you seem to be just one of those types mentioned in an earlier article.
Dod you hear them say "nu-cl-ear" ? Better start running with your signs up to the nation capital! Hurry!
The way I see it, there's a continent that's largely uninhabited, yet for a good reason. It's Antartica. Stays at a toasty -120F but there's a huge area of.... nothing.
The Russians have technology of building things in very cold weather (permafrost in and above the Artic circle), and we have much of the hardware tech needed.
The way things are between us and the Russians, perhaps we could get along on this project. However, we need Financial backing of corporations. Governments are usually known to squander away our money without anything to show for it. A few Corps. will fix the government bloat.
The main reason suggesting Antartica is that even-if a nuclear shuttle does go the way of Challenger, Who's it going to hurt? The drift radiation would be surely no more than usually gotten in cosmic ray bombardment (70 rad/year).
Oh, I'm aware of "those systems". Some of the best hardware like mice and keyboards were made back then. None of that flashy stuff like optical mice, but they stood a good beating. My IBM PS/2 keyboard is still being used. There's been no changes to the PS/2 bus structure since... they created it.
Oh, and about that Micro-Channel. I hoped it would have caught on. That's some of the sweetest tech for the day. Micro-channel Bus Arbritration allowed pretty much SMP for that day. Add whatever (upto 15 devices) you want. Hardware priority will take care of the rest.
So when do you want the schema for the pin-outs? I still have those old books...
I wonder if the _REAL_ CmdrTaco knows about this. It sure fooled me, as he seems as silly as the real Taco. Never the less, from his few past posts, he does seem to post rather intelligent...
If you'reading CmdrTaco, can you explain who that is (aka not you?).
CmdrTaco said: "I really admire the fact that Sony decided to include support for PS1 games in the PS2, I think it's a major reason why it has been so successful (not to mention that fact that it is vastly superior to the competition). Once the Linux kit starts shipping, people will be able to port their own emulation kits for various console systems to the PS2. Then it would surely be worth the $299 plus whatevever the kit costs. I know the dreamcast took off with the Linux kit, with people writing emulators for MAME, SNES, etc. With this option the PS2 would become a virtual home entertainment center."
Well, considering that Nintendo slit thier own throats by NOT being able to play DVD's, they had to challenge Microsoft somehow. MS could play DVD's and thier software ports to the xBox easily. MS had no holding in the console side of stuff until xBox, however they had PC games. However, PC's are known to easily crash (under Windows). Sony had no choice BUT to support PS1 games. Since they did, people still buy PS1 games and buy the newer PS2 games made for that console.
Now on to the question of Devel tools... I highly doubt that they will release any medium or high power devel tools on this platform. Their boot code is highly secret. Do you think they'll let ANYBODY except themselves even look at a dead listing of it? Don't think so. They'll probably find a way to get fairly powerful tools, but no accessable kernel drivers. They would have to totally restrict kernel accesses.
CmdrTaco said: "I bought a Nintendo as soon as I had earned enough money (paper routes, drug dealing, and all those other fun childhood fundraising activities). Simple, Ignore the warnings on the back of the carts and use alcohol and q-tips to clean the connectors. The only reason for that "disclaimer" is so they can rip you off on thier over-priced cartridge cleaner kits. And last, please explain why "Emulation programs" are lame? Is it because you don't understand how they work? Many emulators are open source, so you can see how that idiot-game-box truly works. Many papers on emulation also contain pin-outs so you can MAKE your own devices.

I've never seen a cashier so unhappy about their job! It took about 20 minutes for her to count it all, but soon after I was on my way toward bliss..until the cartridges died that is."
That implementation of a Apple 2 GS processor 658(c)16 encouraged some of the best programming praticies ever made. If you rebind the sound (or just turn it off), these programs will run on the apple. But wait, emulation is lame. Oh, right. the Apple 2 gs was the native hardware, with exception of a 8 channel sound card (Sony spc700 processor) vs the standard 32 channel (was it GUS ?). The only 2 games to have 48 mBit carts had voice in parts of them, and one had a whole song, with full singing (Tales of Phantasia). With emulation, it was translated to English by DeJap. Even the vocal tracs are being worked on to a 100% English version. Now Thats Lame.

You're right, CD's are more fragile. However, carts are not hurt by normal magnetic fields. The RAM can be disrupted by mildly weak EMP. Still, I can't believe you'd actually SUPPORT a proprietary CD caddy!!! If you've used computers fmore than 3 years, you'd know that older CD-ROM drives and Mac drives used this EXACT THING. Microsoft gets into a suit and then pleads guilty. If they had the balls, they could pack up, and declare ALL MS Software liscenes "VOID IMMEDIATELY". Picture the confusion in the US.... no world.

Sorry, it was supposed to be 10^6 rounds/minute . That's what sleep deprivation gets me. No need to flame about it though (Alan).
