    As a stand-alone company, Apple's hardware unit could offer its users computers equipped with a Microsoft Windows operating system. That move alone, Kastner estimates, would double the company's market share.

    Oh yes, very realistic. An Apple with i386 hardware running windows. Yes, I can definitely see how beneficial and appealing that would be.

    The problem with most of these announcements is that either due to the lack of

    • a) funding
    • b) applicabilty in vivo hominis

    these things never ever have an impact on clinical medicine. All these press releases do is please the ego of the biologist. Clinical medicine is mostly untouched by "discoveries" like that.

    Boot Openbsd from the floppy drive and use a serial port CD-Rom for the install. OpenBsd will virtually work on every machine and even a non X-Windows install should give you enough functuality.

    Together with obsolete hardware you will give away the most secure machines ever to your clients.

    Oh oh and we pay a SHITLOAD for cars here too, like 15 metric assloads for a car, that's right this BIG fat country with 20 million people and you can't find a decent second hand car under 10,000$ - but our backwards sheep plowing neighbours in NZ can score ex Japanese imports in the 6000$ (NZ!) range... wheeeeee

    So, maybe you'd think that we'd all be more free if the government tells us what we can and can not drive, or if you think you should dictate my life based on your preferences, but personally, I don't care

    It's not about me or your government telling you what to drive, it's just that the age of enlightenment obviously passed by you and your kind.

    Personal freedom does not mean you're not allowed to make rational choices.

    ...and isn't contributing to the future and common good of the nation a paramount goal for every american? I always thought you guys are so patriotic. Obviously not at the fuelpump.

    Somehow the editors and most of the clientel of /. don't see the necessity for more efficient individual transport. Maybe this reflects the mainly American clientel of this site, who seems to have decided that fuel-guzzling SUV's and the aforementioned supersportscars are the way to drive into a climate-changed future that still depends on burning gazillions of gallons of refined oil.

    Apart from it's tinkerability the nice thing about the Smart is it's fuelconsumption and innovative approach on individual transport: less is more.

    As usual though, this is probaly read by some idiot who thinks his personal freedom and personality are expressed by a huge V 12 sportscar/SUV in his garage.

    I remember downloading and running a 3 minute demo on my Amiga 2000 that wasn't only mindbogglingly beautiful to look at but also had the coolest EBM-soundtrack you could imagine. Size of the file: 16kb

    Bloody amazing...

    Why in the world buy this book when you can get a nice, crisp copy of Openbsd for a couple of dollars from here and with just a few man pages get a better and secure platform in a matter of minutes.

    If you want to cheat Theo out of his hard earned money you can even ftp it (but that would be cheating).

    Think of JH's move to Apple as his opportunity to spread the gospel to a wider audience than FreeBSD (of all OS's).

    Fortunately OpenBSD keeps up a good PPC port, and using openbsd on an Ibook or Ti-book is immensely satisfying.

    I am running OpenBSD on a 2 GB partition on my Ibook's HD, next to Classic and OS X, and it works like a charm.

    Now, can you blame a fashion concious geek for rather sporting a beautiful portable computer with the most secure OS ever next to the most usable Unix ever?
