We had loads of VCPs at our school. They were pretty sweet, quite small for the time too (early '90s). Ideal for that application, but I would never have had one at home. Even if you don't record in the bedroom, it's damn useful if the one in the living room breaks.
OTOH, over here in the UK, there are no ad breaks in the middle of movies on Satellite / Cable (on the mainstream dedicated movie channels at least), just a lot at either end.
Maybe the front page will be crawling with banners but the results ad-free?
I use a lot of other people's computers, and my work machine. None of these have got a firewire port on them, so it's all very well saying it only takes x seconds to do this or that, in portability terms it's not much use if over 90% of the machines you use aren't able to connect to it.

Too right. I sorted out my parents' PC a couple of years ago. A Cyrix 300 with 64 meg ram, 4 gig hard drive. The only thing that has needed replacing was the CD-Rom drive. total cost including replacements: gbp350. They are still more than happy with it.
Or even better, an optical or S/PDIF commection. No loss at all :-)
Too true on the Australia part.. If there isn't anyone, you _might_ get CDMA coverage, otherwise it's a Satellite phone for you.
:-(
However, even in/near smaller remote towns you can be pretty certain of getting Telstra coverage, though Optus is a different matter
The phones there are at about the same level as they are here in the UK, ie. pretty good. Just don't go on Optus if you're leaving the big cities!
Maybe it is just the oxygen-sensitive layer that is biodegradable. Leave your cheap DVDs outside for 10 years, then you can play them again!
Secret agents, that's who. Self-destructor DVDs beat crappy tape any day ;-)

Nothing like inhaling lead particles from your pencil shavings while you're floating around in space
Erm, don't pencils use Graphite these days?
