Exactly my point, if I'm going to play a fantasy game. I don't want it to BE like real life. I WANT to be the guy that storms the Normandy beach and LIVES. I want to be the Jedi that defeats Darth Vader. Not the janitor that cleans up after the bounty hunters bachelor party.
...is why you would want to play a game based on an epic series where you don't get to be a main character.
It's like playing a hobbit in the shire in a LOTR MMORPG. Big deal. All these world shattering events are occuring and you're pulling weeds out from between your toes.
So what if you get to play a stormtrooper in the Empire? you can't REALLY make a big difference in the game because you already know that Lando is going to blow up the death star. You can only be a "big fish in a little pond" in a way. Sure, you can be the biggest despot on the planet you control, but so what?
Games like "Asherons Call" and even "Everquest" would seem to be a little more fun. There is a chance that you could be the one that casts the ancient sepll that sends the evil back to where it came, or you could be the one that becomes the biggest source of evil in the world.
Not to mention the fact that MMORPG means you have to interact with other people online. bleh. I've had my fill of 10 year olds trash talking in CS and Quake. Who needs some skeezoid playing a wookie to start following you around, picking you up and shaking you for change every chance he gets?
Which also brings up another point that wasn't mentioned in the article.
How will the light be affected by corrective lenses. Glasses could be removed obviously if necessary, but contacts may not. Any kind of corneal resurfacing could affect the transmission of light through it as well.
my understanding from the FTC press release

FTC Goes After Spammers
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
My understanding is that they are going after the chain mail and pyramid schemes, not trying to shut down all the porn email (oooooh, hot girls waiting just for ME!!! WOW!!!) So it won't do anything about the deluge of unwanted email pouring into your inbox, just keep people that are dumb enough to answer the ads from hurting themselves. Like putting nerf corners on the world of email for them
I would rather see some kind of legislation that holds spammers accountable if their "remove' methods do not work. I think a "do not call" type of list would be better than nothing. Filters don't always work, no matter how well you configure them. Maybe a new version of the SMTP protocol that would require a secure connection or authentication by you to be able to send you an email
--insert comment to the effect of "what has slashdot come to posting this type of story
--insert comment to the effect of "if you weren't such a loser you wouldn't get spam"
--insert comment to the effect of "jane you ignorant slut that's not what it says at all"
--insert comment to the effect of "this is all the fault of M$ and their monopolistic practices"
Most nearsightedness and farsightedness is caused by the eye, and consequently the retina, not being in the correct shape. The image is formed either too far ahead or behind the retina.
I read the article but I didn't see any mention of how the beam would project on malformed retinas. If you are farsighted and you use this Microvision system, will the image appear to be deformed as well? Will it look like you are sitting too close to the movie theater screen?
I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the previews when it came out. I thought it would be a musical with some original music. Most of it was just pop songs scored differently. bleh. Can't believe how long it was either. I had to stop myself from laughing because my finance was enjoying it and I knew if I wanted to have any hope of sex that night that I'd have to enjoy the movie too.;)
They just had Jennifer Connelly on the Today show talking about her nomination. yum yum. She's been intelligent eye-candy in enough movies, it's about time she was nominated.
Of course you know LOTR won't win Best Picture. It doesn't have any mentally handicapped people or crazy people in it (unless you count Saruman? Maybe they should have promoted it as "Boromir: One mans journey through madness" or "The Dark Lord: He saw the world differently")
"HI THIS IS BOROMIR. GIVE ME THE RING"
"I think that's a little too enthusiastic Boromir"
The online support application they want you to install is provided by support.com (never heard of them). It provides a "rescue" feature (probably just a registry backup). Anyway, I installed it, it seemed to use a lot of my computers horsepower performing a backup. So I uninstalled it. No biggy, of course I'm sure once I call up and complain about 404's and quality their first question will be "did you install our support app and check the FAQ?"
Which file did you try? I JUST (2:34 Mountain Standard Time) went there (www.download.com, which then redirected me to download.cnet.com). I then tried to download WebShots Desktop (#1 on the download list) and it required a registration. However, I did not have to register to download Music City Morpheus Or Download Accelerator. I could not download Adobe Acrobat reader without registering either.
I haven't been able to determine what types of files or file catagories or what it is about each file that triggers the registration and I haven't been able to find anything at the site that explains it either.
Anyone have any ideas?
It says that some tracks will be listed in MP3 format, the rights holder has to request that their track be encoded in the "secure".nap format.
Sure it'll be cracked before the final version of Napayster is released. If the idea of pay-to-download tracks was a financially sound one, the record labels would already be doing it.
So what about the PDF format? It seems open enough to me, there are plenty of third party options for creating PDF documents.
Why should we replace one standard (.doc) with another (rms)?
Have you ever noticed that when someone speaks of closed software, they ALWAYS mention Microsoft. They never talk about the Java Compiler being closed or Oracle or Gemstone?
Shows that it's really more about their Microsoft bias than any kind of open source ideology.

BTW download.com now requires you to register before you can download any files, just like fileplanet.com does.
Those people get weeded out (or promoted to management) very quickly in the real world. :)
Has anyone read the preview?
