I met Stallman late last year. I mentioned that I worked on an OSS project at Sun (OpenSSO) and, almost apologetically, that it was CDDL. He picked up my tone and immediately replied "That's great - that's still free software". So - CDDL, 'open source', according to OSI, 'free', according to RMS.
Disclosure - I am a Sun employee. Hopefully unaffected by this move. I am speaking for myself here, not for the company.
Having said that, this is a targeted cut. Not a cheese-paring '10% everywhere' as has happened in the past. The execs have taked a hard look at our business and decided that we'll focus on what makes sense for Sun. Areas that don't make the cut will be, well, cut. What's remaining will be left intact.
In fact, my group has openreqs that we are actively filling. Unusually, these are entry-level positions. If you're fresh out of college and want to 'live in interesting times', as the Chinese proverb has it, then take a look.
If the system is secure, then knowledge of the implementation won't compromise security. A secure system requires knowledge of the KEYS to compromiuse it.
Disclaimer: I work at Sun, but I'll try and be as objective as possible...
A few months back, I switched offices and traded my Ultra 60 workstation for a SunRay. To be honest, it's difficult to tell the difference - apart from the SunRay is silent, and when it went wrong one time, the admin simply swapped it for an identical one from his cupboard.
Oh - and I no longer have root access, but then, I never (legitimately) had root at Uni, either...

Oh, I love my Le Creusets. I've had some of those for 20 years now...
Insightful? Please!

Security 101. Read some Schneier.
