This article is not about banning anything, it isn't even about the Internet as a whole.. it is talking about a new product being developed that will allow administrators of bandwidth-choked networks to more easily PRIORITIZE file sharing rather than ban it.. This is a Good Thing! If this project is successful and this product works, it will be good for free speech! Remember, the primary reason that colleges ban Napster is because of bandwidth concerns, not copyright concerns.. this product would rule out the bandwidth issue.
This news upsets me. Never mind that it is impossible for Yahoo! to monitor the hundreds of auctions going on on their site, I am not liking the trend of US Companies and web sites being subject to other countries' restrictive laws.
Even if you ignore the historical relevance of this stuff, and you think it shouldn't be sold, the fact of the matter is, under US law it is OK, and this is a US company.
France might think they have the right to ask for it to be censored in their country, and they might be right about that, but ask for money? What makes them think Yahoo! should pay them? They are under US law. A disturbing trend indeed.
It really is not Microsoft's fault OR the users' fault. When malicious people try their best to trick people, who should we blame when those efforts are successful? The tricksters or the tricked? Or, on the subject of blaming Microsoft, should the USPS be blamed when someone runs a pyramid scheme? Or the phone company? Let's face it, a VBS file is equivelent to an EXE, and unless you're saying sending software through email attatchments is inherently evil then Microsoft is not to blame.
The user is the victim here. Just because it is common sense to you and I not to run strange attachments does not mean that it should be expected of everyone else to have the same sense. The users were deceived by a malicious coder, and it does constitute fraud and is illegal. That's why just about every country has laws against fraud. It just isn't just to punish victims of deceit.
IANAL, but as far as I know this is just an out-of-court settlement, and it does not set a legal precident. Therefore anyone wishing to sue other game manufactures over other games still have to prove the point and make a judge agree. This has not been done yet.
The Bible is not obscene according to that definition. I'm sure not many would disagree that the bible has significant literary value, unlike the hypothetical text of Clinton and his daughter.
This is one of the stupidist things that Katz has ever written.
First, writing letters to your movie theatre won't help. They're just following the law. You can't tell them not to enforce laws just because you think they're stupid. Try that argument next time you get a speeding ticket. If you really think the law is stupid, you need to be writing your congressman, if you think that will help.
Second, You don't need to give excuses like saying you're a physician to leave a movie. You're not in prison, they can't force you to stay.
Third, it's dead easy to get into an R movie. I'm 17, but I like to go with my 15-year-old friend. We scanned his passport, changed the birthdate, printed it, and told the theatre it's a photocopy. It got him into Southpark, American Pie, and Arlington Road.:)
Anyway, I just got kinda irritated because usually I like reading katz' stuff.
No, this has nothing to do with raw materials, rationing, or anything else. It has to do with artists getting what they deserve. As it is, they get hardly anything from their work.
If you like the music, show your support and buy the stupid CD for a lousy $15 and quit yer whining. The artists will stop making it (or at least, the label will stop selling it) if it isn't profitable. That's called capitalism.
bottom line, whenever a product which a company is trying to sell becomes available elsewhere for free, it threatens their bottom line. So you really can't blame them. That's called capitalism. An artist *needs* a label because there's no other way to get their music to a mass audience (obscure websites and little blurbs on mp3.com don't cut it). And the labels will go away if the profits go away.
Get real, cheapskate. Buy the CD (my collection nears 200..) and get over it.

"...But i can only play MP3s on my computer. This new format doesn't work with my old equipment, so it sucks."
Nobody is saying that. not even DVD works on old equipment (that VHS slot is a little too big)
If I buy 2 brand-new computers, I can play all my mp3s on either computer without paying extra. If I buy 2 brand-new DivX players, I have to buy seperate movies for each one. That is ridiculous. DivX is ridiculous.

Is it just me, or does this whole thing remind you of elementary school?
Gore: I invented the internet.
Repub: Oh yeah? well I invented the paper clip!
Gore: oh yeah, of course you did, you're a dinosaur!
Politicians. Hmph!
