Apple's UI scales DOWN very badly. It's highly optimized for high-resolution screens. Just use OS X at 1024x768 and then try it at 1600x1200. Screen Real Estate is problematic at the lower resolutions. The main reason that Apple doesn't ship 1920x1200 15.2" Laptops is pixel density is higher than necessary for the real estate. The iBook already has problems with cramming too many pixels into a fixed amount of screen.

Nice to see that NFS has addressed the Infamous 'Sun Network Lockup' issue, where networks with a lot of cross-mounted filesystems would die in a cascade of lockups if a fileserver died.

SMB of course addresses that problem inherently.

    Never heard of Read-only filesystems?

Mount static filesystems read-only, and make them EXT2 for performance. Use a journalling FS for dynamic filesystems. Reap the benefits of both.

Oh, yeah. NFS doesn't suck, it's just got some issues that Samba doesn't have (And vice-versa). Exporting filesystems to unix clients is one of the advantages of NFS.

Exporting private shares, and common work directories is handled better by Samba though.

  12. Re:The only one that matters on Linux File System Shootout · · Score: 1

    Which is why Samba rocks.

It may have it's issues, but it's far more robust than NFS, which has major issues with access control, locking and machine availability (Although I understand NFSv4 addresses the file locking issues). SMB/CIFS which was intended for an unreliable of DOS machines, handles machine availability much better, and also handles user-level authentication and ACL's. NFS uses machine-level authentication and lacks robust ACL support.

NFS does have it's uses for providing filesystems to Diskless workstations, but that's it.

Now I understand there are some very nice Network File Systems with support in Linux, that far exceed SMB in features and performance, but I haven't played with them.

And the solution to poor network performance with SMB enabled is to set up one of the Samba boxes as a WINS server, and use WINS instead of broadcast name resolution.
