Let me start by saying that as far as I'm concerned, a diamond's a diamond's a bunch of C stuck together in a rather nifty way. I'm not part of the "some people" described below.
But... to some people out there the "value" of a natural diamond lies not in the price, but in the fact that it was created "by Nature", kinda like how some (most? all?) parents think their two year old's drawing is the single greatest masterpiece on earth, more valuable than anything, and certainly more valuable than your _exact_ same mess of red, yellow, green and brown scrawlings.
It's not the end result, which may be indistinguishable, it's how it came to be that will, to some, make "real" diamonds be more valuable than "man made" diamonds.
Of course, hacker is still my preferred word, explanation given when needed, and I think as time passes knowledge and understanding of the difference between hacker and cracker will build in the minds of the general public.
Could Microsoft afford to bundle their "iPod killer" for free with every copy of Windows sold? That'd be one way to get their product out there.

Most of the press however... *shrug*
A little pun on locksmith.
While a locksmith makes and installs locks, he's also called in to open locks when keys are lost or on the (at that moment) wrong side of the lock.
