I quit reading salon.com after they insisted on displaying flash adds in place of what you expect is the article. If you click "back" when you see the add you will be taken to the article, but I don't like being tricked into viewing something, especially useless adverts.
Are all these copy protection schemes just short term solutions to keep people in a frenzy while the industries work out their REAL digital music plans? I still think the labels are still thinking they can control somewhat what people do with their cd's. Big business has a difficult time adapting to even the slightest change. The amount of money the industry will spend on tech support for the poor saps who can't get their music to play in a dvd player will be added to the total cost the industry has spent on this so called Digital Rights Movement. That sum should be an impressive amount, greatly exceeding the total dollars they claim to have lost from file sharing, but coming close to matching what they've spent in the courts. Let's give miss Rosen a big round of applause for her hard work all these years keeping us consumers happy:...
If hacking cars is dead, why did so many people head to the theaters to see fast & the furious? I too own a Honda, a civic hatch, but not your average soccer mom's Honda. It is heavily modified (not hacked but my LAN in the hatch doesn't have a firewall) in all the areas, to the point where not much is stock anymore. Tweaking one's own car to alter it to represent YOU is something most everyone would love to do but not all of us have the motivation, money, or mentality to spice up our otherwise boring rides. When new cars are bought these days most people stick to what is given to them. In some cases due to warranties you aren't "allowed" to make any mods and if you do it may void the warranty. Others like myself find the options as far as security, audio, lighting and horse power are pretty weak to my standards so I dump tons of money and floss it. As far as theives go you might as well not even bother because if someone wants your ride bad enough they WILL find a way to get it or damage it if they fail. The only protection you have is insurance to protect your investment. I've had my ride broken into for it's audio components and the fuckers slashed my seats coz they couldn't get the head unit out. It looked like they used an axe! Nevermind trying to steal it they just fucked it up and took an amp and a capacitor that they could pry off. Keep receipts on everything you buy, take pictures of your shit, and crank up your aftermarket coverage and your prepared for the worst. I agree that today's newer cars are becoming more difficult to modify. Honda for example is making it difficult to add performance headers to the newest line of civics because of the strict emissions. What's a Honda Hacker to do!
It is a bad idea to try and pursuede a group of techies to consider renting music online when we are the ones who realize the limitations of such a business model and would most likely hesitate to pay. So the industry tests their programs. Then theres the task of convincing the not-so-technical public, most who still use a dialup, to pay for the right to "hear" music online. This software is better appealing for users with broadband connections and most of us get by with the other methods that are currently under fire.
Off topic, but I want to see: (1) Total $ Lost by us copying files (2) Total $ spent on copy protection, lawyers, fees, propaganda?
I switched to Verizon's DSL here in New England after Mediaone was bought out by AT&T. Since AT&T bought them out, I received nothing but disconnects trying to reach their foreign customer service reps to regain connectivity while being told by a "Level 2 repair tech" that I can't use a router with the service? I could go on and on about how much aggrivation they caused me, but the bottom line is switching to another provider was the best thing I could have done. It also cut down on my Tylenol expenses since the pounding headaches vanished along with AT&T's broadband.
I have had it with cable provider's igorance and I couldn't see paying $50 for this frustration each month. Cable is the one service that I can never seem to be happy with, in terms of price vs service. We currently have AT&T as our TV cable service and due to them just raising their rates with their current stranglehold on the market in this area I'm having every piece of AT&T cable removed from this house and I will never pay another dime to AT&T again! I don't trust a company that can't make any revenue with such a strong monopoly and freedom to raise the rates. Hopefully Verizon can suit my needs until we can all get broadband at cost effective FAIR MARKET prices from ISP's who dont suck.
