Hamming had a real problem w/ Einstein et. al. and the Princeton Institute. His position was that nothing ever was produced at the Institute was due to the staff there not having the constant contact with the students. Hamming taught and produced both great work and good students. Einstein did neither once he joined the Institute.
The house always tips the odds in their favor. But in general that is also true of any business. Barriers, marketing, a good job at selling, exploiting emotions, an addictive product, etc. are all used to ensure there is no level playing field. Any business that wants a level playing field is insane, the want an advantageous position and captured markets.
The only way to actually have anything resembling a Free Market is through careful regulation and government intervention.
If all your job amounts to is running numbers through spreadsheets you're toast. Bye bye data analysts (aka "Statisticians in drag") it's been good knowing you.
That assumes you can. If your apps are hosted remotely (aka "The Cloud") do YOU know what they are using? What about their subcontractors and sub-subcontractors? What about your bank? Let's keep going and ask about your health care provider. And so on. Do you know?
And then there are those who take on the most dangerous missions. They want to die and it is socially acceptable manner to do so. If they they are heres, if they live they are hers. You can't lose.
In Dec. '05 I was traveling through southern AZ and stopped to camp out. I was not in Tuscon but maybe 50 miles away. Looking at the records for that time I see that even if I am off a bit, the temp is far colder than what the OP was using to do "back of the envelope" calculations.
In AMerica $$$$$$ equals respect.
I wish I could mod you up +10000000
Those that can't do and can't teach, administrate.

Government regulations that allow it? How a bout lack of government regulation to prohibit it.
And no guarantee they are not selling it to the Russkis. As Lenin put it, "A Capitalist will sell you the rope you hang him with".

I think better jobs, reduction in racial tensions, and affordable health care would work wonders

What was your control?
I mean what harm is there in removing it? It is not like, for instance, destroying a cities water supply. Do we really need it?
no, they are talking about top tier talent for bottom tier salaries,
You'll find the industry elites in marketing, Google, Amazon, etc. Everyone else solves real problems.
It's a myth see. I searching for a link but it is based on an 60's study of one programming team working one afternoon. Not exactly scientific.
Scientists are portable as well. It's all the same science everywhere.
All the EE jobs are going to India and CHina. They don't require "boots on the ground".
That's it Exper Systems... It's hot! It's new.. It's.... oh crap
most of the software I see these days is 'cargo cult"
And be self aware enough to modify itself.
