It is easy to create your own "game console" with the pc you already own. Just get a video card with tv-out and a "gui" suitable to the low resoloution of your tv such as game launcher instead of a window manager. You don't need the keyboard, you can control it with the joystick. Then you just install xmame and you have a mame console.
But why limit yourself to mame. It is easy to add snes suport with zsnes, divx movies using mplayer, dvd using ogle and you could add pretty much anything else as long as there is software to do it.
In forgotten silver the key "evidence" was a newspaper in one of the bystanders pockets, supposedly printed in 1903, six months before the wright brothers made their first flight at Kitty Hawk. Forgotten Silver (thanks to Jackson's genius) was so realistic that many New Zealanders who watched it were convinced that it was proof that Pearse had indeed flown first. When it was revealed to be a hoax there were angry letters to the editor in the New Zealand Hearld from people who believed it was real.
Here is another article from the New Zealand Herald about using Linux on Sgi 1200 machines for Lord of the Rings. Interestingly, the motivation for using Linux was cost and reliability. They rejected the latest high end stuff because they favoured uptime over having bleeding edge technology.
