  1. Sony makes a pocketable reader on It's 2010; What's the Best E-Reader? · · Score: 1

And it's the same resolution as the larger ones, so has a higher DPI, thus even easier on the eyes.

I'd rather claw my own eyeballs out than read a book on my phone.

  2. You take your shelves with you on the bus? on It's 2010; What's the Best E-Reader? · · Score: 1

  4. The wireless data is a bad thing on It's 2010; What's the Best E-Reader? · · Score: 1

I don't want the manufacturer to have a back door into my reader to change it, delete my books, or spy on me at their whim.

Sony's offerings are quite a bit better. Longer battery life, higher DPI on the pocket reader, and support for the industry standard book format.

  5. They have been worked out on Southwest Declares Kevin Smith Too Fat To Fly · · Score: 1

If you need two seats, buy two seats. He needs two seats (which he admits, because he usually does), but only bought one.

We're not picking on fat people. We're picking on people who steal from the people next to them.

  7. Because they're spilling over into my seat on Southwest Declares Kevin Smith Too Fat To Fly · · Score: 3, Insightful

Yes, it's not right to sneer at people for being fat, whether it's their fault or not. It's perfectly all right to sneer at someone for stealing someone else's seat.

If you need two (or three...) seats buy them. Don't steal from your neighbours.

  11. We need less science, and more engineering on NASA Concedes Defeat In Effort To Free Spirit Rover · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Or at the very least, less pure science and more practical, applicable science.

Yes, whether or not there was ever life and/or water on Mars are very interesting questions, but they won't pay the bills. We should be looking for valuables and other means to support self sustaining installations and then do the pure science on the side.

  12. Equal access on Universal, Pay Those EFFing Lawyers · · Score: 2, Insightful

There can be at least some argument for inequality in health care, but inequality in legal representation perverts the very idea of justice.

  13. Single payer, with penalties on Universal, Pay Those EFFing Lawyers · · Score: 3, Funny

Lawyers should be paid by the government, with equal access to all. Rather than random attorney's fees as a penalty, levy a fine indexed to the plaintiff's income for frivolous lawsuits. Defendants should never be punished for exercising their right to due process, even (and especially) if they are guilty.

  19. demands != suggestions on What Tools Do FLOSS Developers Need? · · Score: 2, Insightful

People who whine and bitch, saying things like "FOSS will never take off if it doesn't conform to me and only me" is why developers say fork it or fuck off. You're not contributing anything, you're just being a nuisance.

Developers get all sorts of random demands from petulant users. If we patiently explained to each and every one of them why their suggestion either isn't a priority (or even would be detrimental to the project) we wouldn't be developers because that would take up all our time.

You won't get anything different from closed source developers, except that you wouldn't manage to talk to them at all. They have a bureaucracy to intercept you, and tell you, politely, to fuck off.

  21. Libraries don't have (or need) permission to lend on Offline Book "Lending" Costs US Publishers Nearly $1 Trillion · · Score: 2, Insightful

They own the books. They have the right to do whatever they please with them, with or without the publisher's permission. Copyright restricts publishing, it says nothing at all about already produced artifacts. Lending very well can lead to copying and redistribution. There's absolutely nothing stopping someone from memorizing a library book and reciting it to their friends, other than the effort. There's no DRM on dead trees.

Copyright made perfect sense in the days where the cost of a printing press meant adding a bit to the cost to pay authors wasn't a burden. That isn't the case today; everyone can (and must) copy things in their day to day lives, with zero to negligible cost involved. We can't just tax that nothing the way we did with the printing press.

It's time to move on. Copyright once served a purpose, but things have changed.

Seems to me you ran away from it with your tail between your legs shortly after. Perhaps you could ask the Japanese to check?

I'll also point out that neither the eastern seaboard nor California could keep the lights on without Canadian hydroelectric. Your uranium comes from there, too, so no nuclear.

But hey, wall yourself off if you like. It will be most amusing. We will, of course, be expecting you to pay off your debts first, and given that you won't be able to maintain a modern military, you'd best do so.
