  3. Re:Well. . . . on Blizzard/Vivendi Files Suit Against Bnetd Project · · Score: -1

Here's the problem with your weak moralization of the issue:

Pockets have a number of OTHER perfectly legal and (arguably) very necessary functions, hence their continued existence. BNETD is trying to replace something that doesn't need to be replaced. There is no reason that Battle.net should be replaced by an open-source equivalent - unless, of course, some people are trying to screw the system and get around copy protection keys. And doing so causes Blizzard to lose money, plain and simple. You can give me all the bullshit you can think of when trying to decriminalize the issue, but the fact remains - there will be certain individuals who will CONTINUE TO USE A PIRATED KEY INSTEAD OF PURCHASING A LEGITIMATE ONE because with bnetd, they can do so freely. And every time this happens, Blizzard loses money.

Take me, for instance. About 8 months ago, I bought a legitimate copy of Diablo II - Lord of Destruction. To play it, I needed to have a copy of the original Diablo II with a valid CD Key. Instead of purchasing Diablo II, I copied a friend's and keygenned my way out of it. All was well until i tried to play on Battle.net - no go, because my Diablo II key didn't check out. Now, if I tried to play on a bnetd server, I would have gotten away with it, and I would have continued to do so. The option wasn't available at the time, though...so i purchased a real copy of Diablo instead. If bnetd had been around and in frequent use at the time, Blizzard would have lost a sale to a pirated version. LOST SALE = LOST MONEY. THOUSANDS OF LOST SALES = MILLIONS IN LOST MONEY.

    Get the picture now?

Just a suggestion...as an alternative to the shitty "GuidePlus+" software that they bundle with the machine, i would recommend SnapStream Personal Video Server. It works VERY well...the scheduler is MUCH more accurate and the video recording formats are much easier to customize. As a bonus, it adds a streaming server that you can set up with relative ease...by doing so, you can watch whatever you have recorded or are currently recording over the web, via Windows Media Player. (sorry, no Linux support). The actual display drivers have proven solid so far, but the TV tuner and recording drivers definitely need some work.

Say what you will about the gangly mob of bastards who made SmoothWall, but it IS a good idea, and it worked well. I really wish there were more "network appliance"-type Open Source projects out there, instead of the current load of crap like slashcode.

    I think YOU are misunderstood.

The original post is attempting to indicate that in universities, programming is taught on open source systems, using open souce compilers. This is simply NOT TRUE. The vast majority of universities are using MS compilers on MS operating systems, because THEY ARE PAID TO DO SO. Linux and Open Source in general are only introduced in the very specialized classes that are actually targeted at *nix programming. Most general programming work is done in Visual Studio 6 applications at this point, and will probably shift toward visual studio .NET in the near future.

But the fact of the matter remains...Linux and Open Source have VERY LITTLE foothold in universities at this point in time, thereby making the submitted story very inaccurate.

I'm not usually one to back microsoft in any event, but facts are facts...and UNIVERSITIES USE MICROSOFT. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional...and anyone who believes them is quite fucking insane.

You'll also have to forgive me for my near-incoherence...but this REALLY gets on my nerves.
