...but checking the "JonKatz" box on the "exclude authors" config page. Saves me having to even think about him, and also saves some screen real estate (no, I don't have to pay $$$ for it, that doesn't mean I like it wasted). Too bad there isn't a similar option for $KERNEL_MINOR_AND_SHORTLIVED_VERSIONS.
Remember that 90% of that $6B is being spent by "computer gamers", not the general public. Among *that* crowd I'd guess that Linux desktop usage is closer to 10-15%. Although that usage is probably not exclusive--meaning they have a Windows machine around to "play games on". Still, presumably they'd buy a Linux game if it was marketed well.
Which to me was the big problem with Loki. They ported CivCTP (which I bought) and then AFAICT fell off the face of the earth. I didn't know they had done dozens of games in addition.
$300M is a *lot* of money if you aren't paying for engine development and original art--which Loki wasn't.
BTW, I really like the idea of CaptionContest but it wasn't ever updated. Now I see your sig proclaims it has been, but the link doesn't work. What up?
I had my server running the firewall. Needed to format a floppy. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda.....Oops. Say, honey, you better check your email one last time and then I'll reinstall the server.
How many natural disasters occurred during the period in question?
How many wars?
How many recessions?
How many terrorist attacks?
How many public gaffes by major corporations/gov't leaders?
In short, how valid is it to compare a virtual, entirely deterministic world with a real economy?
...since they also closed the football and baseball stadiums those roads lead to--those players can be vicious. And the stores--haven't you ever seen the spouse and child abuse that occurs in places like WalMart?
No amount of classes in any topic can make a person begin thinking. The person must want (or need) to start. Typical philosophy classes (and I oughta know, having been a phil major) offer neither impetus.
I thought the problem was the telcos screwing them over with feet-dragging. Unless bankruptcy (please note the spelling) has changed since we covered it in Social Studies, it doesn't force other businesses to start playing fair.
"I can't really see a use for a VPN besides connecting widely distributed corporate offices and internal networks, which is most certainly deserving of business-class rates."
I can. I have family in the area, some with broadband of various kinds. If we shared files more (which will probably happen in the future), it would be nice if we could be hooked up on a VPN so we could just drag and drop to various locations, rather than emailing. It would be simpler and it would take up less bandwidth (one copy vs one upload + one download).
Let me get this straight, the company pays you enough that you can in turn pay $X for the service but they "can't afford" to additionally pay $X themselves (to make up the difference to the $2X price of business-class)? BS. Either you are exaggerating or the company is lying to you--they just don't want to pay for it.
That said, I don't think this is fair. I also don't think it is fair when a company *cough*Verizon*cough* offers "full Internet service* but then blocks ports on the router and outlaws servers in the TOS. If all they want to sell is a watered down, "just look at the pretty pictures and don't do anything technical" service that's within their rights--but then say so on the label.
You in the big cities and even you in the more heavily populated rural areas may not realize what this means. But ask anyone who has driven across Montana, Wyoming, and one or both of the Dakotas: There are literally miles and miles where you cannot get any radio at all. I'm not saying "nothing but talk" or "nothing but Hat Act music". I'm saying literally NOTHING.
For this reason, I'm guessing that satellite radio receivers would be a big hit in Ryder/UHaul trucks. It would also keep them from having to reprogram the radio settings at every location.
This is disgusting!

I've seen some blatant advertising on/. before, but nothing like this. This device is not innovative or new--it plays MP3's. Half the readers of this site have built something more effective (or at least claim to have done so) and probably for 2/3 the price. Is this OSDN's new revenue model? Using Taco as a SpokesDroid for hackneyed wares?
...because I'd like to know what all the fuss is about. You see, I've never read the books. I've read "The Hobbit", but try as I might I was never able to get even 100 pages into LotR. It just seemed to drag on and on with no action, just a bunch of geneologies and crap about hobbit-holes.
As a percentage of all the porn that exists today, it was very small. But expressed as a probability that I would be able to get my rocks off, the amount of Usenet porn in the early to mid 90's was what I would call "sufficient".
I haven't checked your actual figures, but there's really no need since you obviously aren't even addressing the issue. $348 million for a first try at a totally new technology generating X MW is the topic here. Saying "I could use that same money and get more power" isn't the point here.
Also, have you factored in gov't perks, the cost to clean up environmental effects, education for the nuclear techs that work there, etc? Or just building the plant itself?
I can't watch the movie. I get a "general error". I got exactly the same error probably 20 times trying to view the Segway video. This happens for both streaming and downloaded items.
My "suggestions" post from last night wasn't entirely in jest. Except for a single passing reference (which, to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he missed) I haven't made a single fiancee/bambi post today. Aren't you proud of me?
Why not "VA Linux Software"? That would make the ticker symbol make sense, leave the buzzword in there AND be true. Unless they are planning to create/sell software that is not for Linux...?
Mars' atmosphere will eventually deteriorate to the point where it will no longer support us. We must create bio-diversity and separate our eggs into multiple baskets. I propose we start a colony on another planet--how about the the third one from Sol? It's very hot and a depressing combination of blue and green, but it may be our only hope.

What's so difficult and puzzling about forced resonance?

What incredible foresight he must have had to visit his local university or research company and see how the Internet had been working for 15 years!
Hey, maybe I should write a book "predicting" the Mars Rover or Microsoft monopoly.
Won't somebody please think of the male gigolos??

..if his code is as terse and to-the-point as this interview, the kernel's gonna shrink by at least 75%.

Sonic images are old hat. I remember Sega invented a device in the early 90's that could render a full-color sonic hedgehog.
