  1. Re:LCD vs CRT on LCD Round-up · · Score: 1

    1. CRTs are much cheaper
    2. CRTs last longer
    3. CRTs display a higher-res for a given screen-size
    4. CRTs display any resultion you like - LCDs only display one without looking awful
    5. CRTs update the screen much faster - LCDs blur quick-moving images
    6. CRTs have far better color accuracy - you'll never find a professional image person using an LCD
    7. CRTs are much more resiliant - knock an LCD, and watch it die. Brush against it with something sharp, and look at the scratch it leaves
    8. CRTs are brighter
    9. CRTs have greater contrast range - black is black, and white is white
    10. CRTs have higher refresh rates - no LCD screen will display all frames of Quake 3 at 100fps

Jeez, wish I had an LCD screen...

One of the reasons im not into watching movies on my PC is that I cannot take advantage of my DTS gizmos.

Why on earth not ? PowerDVD for one, supports DTS. It will either decode it, and output to your speakers, or it will squirt the digital DTS signal down your Digital-Out, and your AV Reciever will decode it as normal.

That's where most Slashdot readers shop -- the retail market. It's all very well and good for Seagate to be duking it out with Samsung for inclusion in Walmart $199 PCs, but it's Maxtor and Western Digital that are what matter to those of us that build and upgrade our own PCs. They are the competition that spurs on lower prices, larger drives, and faster speeds.

No way ! Most Slashdot readers are tech-savvy, and buy their components mail order, from places like newegg.com, or here in the UK, dabs.com. They know how to get the cheapest price, and that's CERTAINLY not retail ! Anyone that builds and upgrades their own PC, knows to use OEM parts !

Surely the number of Retail drives sold, is TINY compared to the number of OEM's sold ! The retail HD market is worthless.

The UK plug design is plastic along the length of the blade, and only the end is metal. By the time you see the metal tip of the blades, the circuit is already broken.

Only sometimes. Plenty of UK plugs have entirely metal pins, which means you can still manage to touch it when the circuit is live. You've gotta try pretty hard though :)

That's nothing - I remember reading a review of a Philips stand-alone digital Audio CD Recorder in a Hi-Fi magazine. They gave it 4 stars (out of 5), and the guy stated that "the recorded CDs sounded almost as good as the originals, just losing a bit of the warmth". I don't think he knew that a digital copy is identical to the original :) :)

In the UK, they do all do this ! It's only just recently happened though - previously, it was only Orange and One-2-One (T-Mobile). Cellnet (o2) and Vodafone both said their networks were too old to support it. But now they've done it anyway, go figure :)

This keeps coming up again and again. No matter how cheap HDs get, then you can just buy more HDs, just as cheap ! > Sadly, backup technology just isn't keeping up with HD capacities. When >1GB drives first came out, you could get 20GB tapes. Now that we've got 100GB drives, the world needs a TB archive media. When 100GB drives first came out, you could get more 100GB drives. And duh, you still can ! HD's are by *FAR* the best backup format - they're quicker than any other, and actually making a backup is trivial using a disc imaging program.

?!?!?! You seem to forget that if you're going to use your modchip to play copies, then you/your-supplier will patch the copies to remove all "mod chip protections" from them. So if you have an old modchip, you *CAN* play newer games, and older games, and infact any games that you like. You never choose between modchip and legit, and your modechip lasts for ever. Hell, I got my PSX in 1995, and got it chipped in 1995 with an original modchip, and it still works 100% !
