  1. You seem to be conflating 3D and VR. Have you actually tried VR?

  2. I spent yesterday at a Halloween Show performing a VR segment. I spent the weekend a few weeks back demoing various arts pieces. I've probably done nearly a couple of hundred VR demos in total. No technology in my lifetime (I'm late 40s) has elicited such a strong positive reaction across a broad demographic. People still find VR magical and wondrous. I don't care about sales numbers or hype cycles - I think VR is so obviously compelling that it will find it's place given time. It might not be mass market and it might not be for mainstream gaming. But it's not going away.

I would argue that support for indexed images!=lossy compression. You are passing an already altered image to the compressor. It's the color reduction that introduces the loss, not the file format's compression.

Agreed but everyone understands that what is meant by 'Universe' in the phrase "multiple universes" refers to our current understanding of the word 'universe' and hence the phrase 'multiple universes' would amount to a redefinition of 'universe' in a narrower sense.

You know what the phrase means in this context, hair-splitting aside. Although coinages such as 'multiverse' are awkward they get the concept across reasonably well.

Although accurate to argue that 'Universe' should be defined in the widest sense possible and thus not be used in this narrow sense but people intuitively understand what is implied by such a redifinition.

"2) They are not measurable and studiable from our universe, and hence, are definitionally NOT proper subject matter of physics but are properly subject matter of philosophy, and anything that is said about them isn't "science" in any meaningfull sense of that word."

Agreed if there is absolutely no effect on the observable world then 'other universes' should be discarded as metaphysical baggage.

However there is a lot of scope for other universes to have measurable consequences without them being directly 'observable' as such.

Quarks aren't observable and yet they positing their existence makes our desription of certain observable phenomenon so much clearer they have to a strong claim to 'existence'. (this is simply an example so keep your particle physicists on the leash!)

Good post! This kind off sums up the main area of positive influence Microsoft and possibly only Microsoft is able to have - that is the broad influence to enact strategic changes in industry standards. OK half the time they do it in a way that benefits their bottom line and they are quite happy to wreck standards that they perceive (in their rather paranoid worldview) to threaten their bottom line BUT on more than one occasion they have radically accelerated the adoption of technology that may never have seen the light of day otherwise... I am wary to pick any examples cos I am bound to be wrong in the details but I sometimes wonder if how fragmented the industry could become without our favourite evil empire in the picture?
