I actually posted withen the first 50 comments!?! Wow...
Anyway, if they did impose royalties on their "standerd" way of transmitting data, it would be a pain for a few years. All the companies would have to cash out to them, until some phd comes out with another way of doing it and GPL's it...
I hope you are reading this thread. Of all the threads on/. you should be reading this one.
Before you add the banners you may want to consider the following:
1. Adding large shockwave or GIF files to the top of pages that are viewed by 250,000 people each day might not be a good idea, as each of them will be downloading the 500k image... Will the ad's generate enough revenue to cover the added bandwidth requirements? (or does the people whose site is hosting the ads have that kind of bandwidth?)
2. Adding a subscription service that penilizes the people who post the most is NOT a good idea. You could make it cheaper to "subscribe" if the people post a minimum number of times?
3. You could simply ask for donations. It works for Penny Arcade. (I would donate...)
4. Advertising based revenues for websites has been proven to fail. You can not keep a site up on advertising revenue alone. If you want to make this site pay for itself (and your bills), you have to make it profitable, and you should not have all of your revenue coming from one source. (advertising)
5. Making people pay money to "remove" ads is not a good idea. They can simply disable shockwave, or turn off images. If you want us to give you money, you could ask for it, or you could sell a product. Don't fall into the pithole that the record companies are in of trying to make people pay for what was once free. (Learn from history: look at what is happening to the music "subscription" services)
6. If you are going to use this subscription thing, make sure that there are multiple ways of taking in the cash. I will not use paypal, as I have heard too many bad things about it. Get a VeriSign credit card accepter, or take mailed in checks.
7. Consider that a good portion of your readers/writers are poor college students. They may leave if your site becomes too unfriendly.

Yes... the Archos JB is very nice... but the audio quality at volume is REALLY BAD. (I have one) The distortion of the jukebox at a volume setting of 2/3 max is audably greater than my laptop (that has a codec driving a D to A converter to make sound), even on cheap headphones. Also the jukebox has UBS (+- 10mb/sec) while the iPod has firewire (+- 250mb/sec)
I wonder of they are marketing these discs as CD's If they are "CD"'s under the law, and they have the little CD logo on them then they are required to conform to the redbook audio spec (i.e. no scemes).
I wonder if they would sell if they were not labeled as "CD"'s...
Not that I know much about hacking, but you could convince IE that your HTML page should be executed... It does not popup with a choose box for every type of file.
Well, I agree that VB is much easier to write in than C, and Java is just plain fun, but there are some programming concepts that somply can not be done in VB or Java. Both VB and Java require a hig level OS (Win32,Mac,Linux... ect) and Java requires a Java intrepeter to run. Most programming that is done now is for embedded systems (Watches, cellphones, PDA's, toasters... ect) that do not have high level OS's. This type of programming requires direct manipulation if bits and bytes, as there is no grand flat memory space mapper to take care of it for you. If you were to put a high level OS into your watch, so that the programmers aould write Java code for it, it would weight 2.4 lbs, have a battery that lasts 4 hours, and say "Wintel" on the outside...
C is not in direct compitition with the other languages that are out there. C has it's uses, and it just so happens that most of the programming that is being done right now can be done cheapest with c.
I went to mike's party.... it R0ck3d! All hail the fragfest!

Yes...
Let's get some specs on these beaming stations. I could put one in the kiction to replace the thousands of post-its on the fridge.
Does ayone sell these things?
