  1. Re:Sanction. on The Vulnerability of Our Tech-Dependent World · · Score: 2, Interesting

What a malevolent view you have!

The flaw, is in your acceptance of the Malevolent Universe Premise. The theory that man, in his very nature, is helpless and doomed.

The opposite of that idea, is the Benevolent Universe Premise.

"The "benevolent universe" does not mean that the universe feels kindly to man or that it is out to help him achieve his goals. No, the universe is neutral; it simply is; it is indefferent to you. You must care about and adapt to it, not the other way around. But reality is "benevolent" in the sense that if you do adapt to it-i.e., if you do think, value, and act rationally, then you can (and barring accidents you will) achieve your values. You will, because those values are based on reality" [Leonard Peikoff, "The Philosphy of Objectivism" lecture series (1976), Lecture 8.]

Note: I am not necessarily attacking you, because I do not know enough about you, to make such a judgement. I am attacking the idea that is represented in your statement. But, you do sound like you are ready to give up on the world, and I would recommend reading a few books by Ayn Rand.

  2. Sanction. on The Vulnerability of Our Tech-Dependent World · · Score: 0

This article talks technologies that could be used for terrorism. It has many examples of what could be done, and how. The writer then concludes, that our survival depends on our ability to understand this.

The article does not outline the real cause of the problem, and that is the sanction of the evil, by the good.

Evil is inherently incompetent, and cannot exist without the sanction of the good. If we did not give countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, The Palanstenian Authority, etc. the technology that we have developed, they would not be able to produce more than swords.

But now, because or years of appeasment, we are now in a situation where terrorists have the technology to cause mass destruction.

The resolution to problem with terrorism, is not to beef up homeland defense, but to destroy the terrorists. Septemer 11th has made it apparent that they wish to destroy us. The only choice is to destroy them or be destroyed. http://www.aynrandchat.com/war.html

  5. No, you cannot have your cake and eat it too on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 1

Unless you want to replcae pci, and have a crappy system, you can't get it much smaller than it is.

If you make it smaller, then you will have to sacrifice a few pci slots. That means that you will have to fill it with onboard crap, which won't be upgradable.

PCI could be replaced with something smaller, but that won't work, because nobody will be making products for your new bus. (well, unless you new bus is better. Even then, it will take awhile)

There is no way you can have a monster system, make it a lot smaller, and not replace pci, all at the same time.

  7. Is it better than WINE? on Michael Robertson Interview about Lindows · · Score: 1

If you read the article, you notice he only talks about 10 major applications.

It may just be 10 different "modes" for 10 different pieces of software, not a system capable of running any windows app. What is needed, is a system that can emulate all the standard windows API's, not just hacks for a few programs. WINE supports more than 10 apps, and i'm sure there is software that works, that is not listed on the WINE Application Database

The people at Lindows may have got a few programs to work that WINE hasn't. I doubt their applications database compares to WINE's.

I've been waiting about a week or two for this kernel to come out. There is quite a few updates that I looked at in the changelogs a few weeks ago, that I wanna get. Mostly, the update of the sym53c8xx_2 driver.

I would have used one of the beta versions, but I have something against using a beta kernel on my workstation. So sue me ;)

This isn't a "go get the patch, or die" patch, but "get the patch if you run ICS" patch.

And how man /. readers are using ICS? heh.....

Sure, go get the patch, just in case you decide to run ICS on you machines (god knows why you want to do that.....)
