    then it shouldn't hurt HP/ATI/Compaq to advertise their laptop parts as having a 9000 chipset, not a 9200.

    It doesn't have a 9000 chipset.. it has a Mobile 9200 chipset.. which just happens to be the same as the desktop 9000 chipset.

    There are dozens of bad analogies on here.. comparing it to V8 vs V6, horsepower etc etc

    The problem is that horsepower is a measurable statistic.

    They advertise it as a *Mobility* Radeon 9200

    Where do they say that the *Mobility* Radeon 9200 has AGP8x? No where.

    This is no different than Intel selling a Mobile P4.. it's not identical to the desktop P4.. does that mean they can't call it a P4?

    There's nothing measurable about the number "9200". It's an arbitrary number that obviously means something different when prefixed with the word "Mobility".

    If it says Impala with a V8, it had better be a V8, not a V-6 that performs the same as a V8.

    But V8 means it has 8 valves.. What does a 9200 mean? What about a Mobile Radeon 9200? Have you ever seen a Mobile Radeon 9200 that has AGP8x?

    Just because the desktop version of the 9200 has AGP8x doesn't mean the laptop version does. It's not called the Mobile 9200 AGP8x..

    no, it's a bad analogy. Horsepower is a measurable attribute.

    How do you measure 9200?

    They say that the 9000 is identical to the 9200 except that it doesn't support AGP8x.

    Putting a 9200 in a machine that only has AGP4x basically turns it into a 9000. It'd be identical in every way.

    This gives me *all* the features of TiVo (except season passes, big whoop), plus a whole lot more.

    So it gives you all the features.. except the single most useful feature of TiVo.

    Any DVR that doesn't have season passes, isn't worth jackshit.

    Yes, if your products can't compete with the big boys, the other strategy is to go after a niche market that is so so small that the big players don't care about it.


    Isn't that what Apple's business plan is?

    'm sure that HP computers will have a pretty good chance at having Quicktime and iTunes preinstalled to support the 'hPods' ..
    I think this is a really good move for Apple.

    I dunno.. I think the last thing Apple wants is for anyone's first experience with Apple to be Quicktime on Windows.

    True, but that doesn't mean Steve Jobs won't be having a heart attack about it.

    Scrollwheels make a lot of sense.. but no matter how much sense they make, you'll never see one on a powerbook as long as Jobs has his way.

    Yeah, I'm surprised the HP iPod won't be offered in beige... :^)

    I know it's supposed to be a joke, but major PC OEMs haven't make beige computers since the iMac came out.

    But I strongly suspect that such an argument automatically excludes 99% of the potential market for such a product.

    I disagree, people with a living room PC are not the target market for this at all. Those of us who don't want a loud PC in our living room but want all the benefits of it.. that's the target market.

    Or even those of us who will not stand for a bedroom PC.

    It's like 7 icons wide by 4 deep, which means you end up with a large box, rather than a taller slimmer one like in Photoshop.

    You can resize the tool selection box window.. make it 1 icon wide by 30 deep if you wish. Just click the corner and drag, just like resizing any other window.

    It seems much like TurboTax's activation scheme, from the initial details.

    That could be a problem.. if I understand TurboTax's activation scheme correctly, it would be impossible to activate both Photoshop and TurboTax at the same time.

    Isn't this company dead yet? The codecs are only half the problem.. the horrible horrible UI is the main reason why Real sucks.

    I bet they added 4 more banner spots to their UI and called that a vast redesign.

    Already did, the fonts still look horrible.. especially in italics. You get nasty colors.. it's as if OS X doesn't know the what type of LCD my laptop has.

    In Gnome you can override the RGB ordering used for subpixel rendering.. if you choose the opposite order, you get this exact nasty color effect.

    You're not just buying a more expensive version of the exact same thing when you buy an Airport base station.

    We have both an airport and a linksys ap+4port switch at work, and as far as I can tell, the airport doesn't offer anything that the linksys doesn't have. The airport base station really is just a more expensive version of your everyday standard AP
