There's no question that OS X Leopard runs on AMD.
Except it doesn't. You know that hack that lets you install Leopard on vanilla PCs? Doesn't support AMD at all.
Could Apple make it work on AMD? Of course, but that's the point. Apple only has to make it work on the tiny selection of hardware they provide.
The point is that making fun of Microsoft for taking 5 years to put out Vista isn't a fair point at all since Apple doesn't even have to support something as basic as a *compatible* X86 chip.
Most of the complaints about Vista are in relation to drivers. OSX won't even run on AMD cpus... if OSX were actually competing in the same space as Vista, it'd be a laughingstock.
There won't BE any real competition until the bundling is broken and consumers can make an ACTIVE choice without being penalized or relegated to a few specific models.
Oh please. Firefox has shown us that a good alternative will indeed make headway, regardless of what is bundled.
So that would allow people to make Vonage SoftPhones and Skype for the iPhone. Thus allowing people to use the iPhone without having to use the Network provider.
So? My HTC Apache has wifi and there is a skype app for it... that didn't prevent cell providers from selling it with the ability to run 3rd party software out of the box.
Apple sold about 1.5 billion songs in 2006 for $.99 and are estimated to make around $.10 per song.
Those estimates are off. Remember Universal was complaining about only getting 70 cents per song. So Apple gets 30 cents per song. 30 cents * 1.5 billion songs = 450million.
Far far more than "apple doesn't make any money on itunes".. which is what the OP said.
The quality of a 256k AAC encode vs. a 256k MP# Amazon encode may be somewhat different, but at those bitrates it's probably basically indistinguishable.
True, but the 256kbps AAC is CBR. The 256kbps mp3 is VBR. I'll take VBR over CBR.
The time zone update is pushed to anyone who tracks volatile (along with their antivirus updates, for example), this is not different from Microsoft auto-update or any other OS.
Yes it is. Microsoft's autoupdate will actually install the update. Debian by default doesn't track volatile.. it's not even commented out in the config.. you'd have to google for the repository address and add it by hand.
The key word here is "comparable". You're limiting yourself to the small subset of PCs that are similar to a Mac.
That is right on the money.
There is no Apple that is comparable to my $800 HP notebook. There is no Apple that is comparable to my $450 HP desktop... these are off-the-shelf systems (got the desktop at Walmart of all places), not built-in-my-garage systems.
Apple will be dipping into the coffers to cover the initial and ongoing R&D expenses for the iPhone for years to come.
I love how people think that R&D is some external cost. Apple is profitable every quarter. That means that R&D for the iPhone has already been recouped. Income was more than Payroll last quarter and will be again this quarter.
Up until Panther, each version of OSX ran faster than the previous one. But Tiger is definitely slower than Panther. Looks like Leopard will continue the trend.
Allowing a signed application to punch through the firewall is indeed "defective by design".
Um.. so other than placebo effect, how would you explain the difference in speed? Slower electricity in the 700m?
That poster didn't have permission to view all the running services. He should've used sudo.
Apple is the middleman in this case.
Except it doesn't. You know that hack that lets you install Leopard on vanilla PCs? Doesn't support AMD at all.

Nope.. those "chumps" got their phone subsidized. You didn't. You're the chump.
So is Apple.
Yup. Corn itself is a hybrid mutant.
I've seen that bug too.. with rm and grep. It's caused by shell expansion.. "too many files".
I wish it did focus on the backend more. Optimization is the second biggest problem with software these days, security/stability being number one.
Web development is especially bad at optimization. This thread demonstrates the problem:
http://forums.devnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?t=74613
People there are actually recommending you wait until your server fails before you look to optimize.
Oh please. Firefox has shown us that a good alternative will indeed make headway, regardless of what is bundled.
The fact is, Linux just isn't good enough yet.

I say the best thing about Blender is its renderer. It has such a unique ethereal look.
Try half a billion dollars last year. Apple makes serious money on iTunes.
Yes it is. Microsoft's autoupdate will actually install the update. Debian by default doesn't track volatile.. it's not even commented out in the config.. you'd have to google for the repository address and add it by hand.

Yes. Universal was experimenting with DRM free tracks well before Jobs' letter. They had DRM-free tracks on yahoo's music store back in 2006.
Because thus far we've only had Apple's word for it that the labels are preventing them from doing XYZ.
Amazon having more DRM free content than Apple indicates that Apple wasn't trying as hard as they made it seem.

XP came out in 2001.. I'd say a PC built in 2001 would have no problem running XP.
Up until Panther, each version of OSX ran faster than the previous one. But Tiger is definitely slower than Panther. Looks like Leopard will continue the trend.
Time to retire those "feels snappier" jokes.
Um.. then how do you explain the fact that AT&T gives Apple $9/month per customer?
