    Starship Troopers has one of the best director commentaries I've heard.


    He actually scared the hell out of me when he started screaming.

    The best commentary I've heard was for The Big Hit. The director was hilarious.. "Even though this is stupid and no one would ever do this.. I made him do it anyway because it looked cool"

    Did you even read the article? The whole article was about how Children of Men isn't being marketed as "sci-fi" because of the stigma.

    Unfortunately for me, the only reliable broadband in my area is from Comcast, who charges you an extra $15/month for broadband if you don't get it bundled with their $15/month basic cable.


    Cox is the same. The difference between Internet and Internet + Basic Cable TV is $3.

    Let's see it play back an HD file (i.e., 720p or 1080i) without hiccups or spending hours re-encoding TS files.


    AppleTV doesn't support 1080i either.. and its support for 720p is limited to 24fps.

    Plus AppleTV only supports h.264, which has an excruciatingly slow encoder.

    He's saying that the Apple TV will support *normal def* with component, it already supports 720P out-of-the-box.


    It only supports 720p24. Broadcast HD is 720p60... you're looking at 1/3rd the framerate of current HD programming in the US.

    Everything can be achieved with far less buttons, in a much smaller and neater remote than any other TV/media device offers


    Except volume control... and powering your TV.

    My TiVo remote is trained to adjust my TV's volume and turn it on and off. I don't even know where my TV's remote is.

    Tivo is not necessarily the right product to compare it against.


    Why not? You can purchase content from Amazon unbox on TiVo. It can stream content to and from your PC. What does iTV do that Tivo doesn't?

    What on earth is your problem with H.264?


    The hardware requirements to decode it are nasty compared to xvid. My 600mhz ibook isn't fast enough to decode 640x480 h.264, let alone full screen.

    OSX is riddled with undocumented APIs.. like the transition effects used in fast user switching, the dock uses an undocumented API to do minimization, etc.

    I'd say the market is competitive. Unless you play tricks and exclude Macs as being part of the same market (as they did in the original US case).

    Slashdotters have been claiming for years that OSX isn't only a viable alternative, but a better one.

    Nope, and the slimline PS2 has even worse compatibility compared to the fat PS2.

    And Apple is not a monopoly, since the consumer is free to choose some other computer instead.


    I was just kidding.. I don't think Apple has a monopoly on computers. I also don't think Microsoft has a monopoly anymore either. OSX is a viable alternative.

    They both run any UNIX software out there.


    Not really. We have an icecast server that streams from 5 different soundcards. This won't run on OSX because OSX doesn't provide /dev/ access to hardware.

    Most Mac monitors are calibrated in software, not hardware


    So the Mac can see what type of lights I'm using and adjust the color temperature accordingly?

    1. typefaces:
    a designer uses a 'faux bold' and 'faux italic' in there design, when printed, those are reverted to the normal face of the font
    reason: extended windows features that are not typographically correct, and do not translate correctly in postscript


    You see the reverse problem on OSX. When printed it looks fine.. but when translated into XML and sent to syndication, all of a sudden, that movie that previously got 3 stars now gets 3 H's because, instead of using UTF-8, Quark and most other OSX typesetting apps still use Mac Roman character set and dingbats fonts for special characters.

    Mac Roman needs to be abolished from OSX.

    Do technologies like hardware acceleration for X windows, more focus on open standards (Open LDAP, SMB, etc.), make Apple as evil as microsoft?


    Um, SMB was made by Microsoft, and Active Directory uses LDAP.

    A Wii and a DVD player take up less space than a PS3. By far. And you need a controller + remote anyway. Controlling DVDs with a PS2 controller is tedious and my wife can't do it.

    There are others of course, but the point is there are not enough games out there ... yet. Kind of like when the PS2 launched.


    I hope you're not comparing the PS2 launch with the PS3 launch.. they couldn't be more different.

    The PS2 launched a year before Nintendo and MS and it was $100 cheaper than the Dreamcast.

    Slashdot appears to hate the PS3 and love Linux... yet which console runs Linux out of the box as a freaking menu option?


    I love Linux. However, I expect my consoles to play games. I don't see any appeal to a $600 linux box with only 256 megs of ram and VESA video drivers. I think the Cell processor overrated, and certainly not "the future" any more than transmeta's Crusoe was "the future".
