"the reality, many of us are learning, is very very far from what we're told"

The iPhone is great proof of this. Ooh shiny. But it's not anywhere near 3G.

I think most of the tech people realized how far we were behind around 5 years ago. The internet has been a wonderful tool for this.

The problem for politicians is that the media is finally starting to put the pieces together and the climate in the country is very anti-Washington/politics these days. The media putting the pieces together means that Jim Bob sitting in his trailer park with his Mom is starting to realize that we're further behind. Not being the best is not American, therefore, problems and hilarity ensue.

You know, it's no wonder the PS3 is selling as bad as it is. How can anyone take this company or division seriously when you have an executive in Europe saying "they're doing this to clear out units", the American executive saying "it's not a fire sale" and then the head executive in Japan saying "the Euro guy was right but he forgot to mention we have enough stock to last a few months". I'll admit Nintendo's done some stuff like this before, like when people were trying to find out if the Wii was region-free, but when you have a system that isn't selling, it's not the time to be displaying confusion and incompetence of this magnitude.

It's really starting to get really hard to understand the truth in any news that comes from Sony these days. These guys should run for Congress.

Odd. I finished Twilight Princess with only having to hit up FAQs twice I think. And that was when I couldn't figure out some pretty damn obvious things in retrospect. Not I said finish. Not find every damn thing in the game.

Same thing with the Zelda:Oracle games on the Game Boy Color.

I think I stopped using strategy guides maybe 6 years ago. Gaming is a lot more interesting without something to hold your hand.

    On the flip-side:

Look at DDR and Guitar Hero. Both feature accessories that are incredibly limited in scope. Yet Harmonix and Konami are raking in cash with them. Which you pointed out.

Also, a lot of arcade games these days center around non-traditional input devices.

Talk to HCI people and I think they'll agree that custom inputs will always be preferred to a general device by users. Especially if it maps a lot better to the task at hand. If the game industry wants to expand beyond the core audience, they need to break down the barrier between the game and the user. Which means, doing away with the abstract link between pushing buttons and what happens on screen. Which is pretty damn evident when you look at the near universal appeal of something like Guitar Hero.

As someone who grew up with the NES and SNES, Nintendo has always been "gadget-happy" and looking for alternate interfaces. I know back home I have the following:

NES: Zapper, Power Pad, Advantage (Arcade joystick styled controller), Max ("Analog" style controller.. also has wings like a PlayStation controller)
    SNES: Mouse, Super Scope

More Nintendo peripherals isn't anything new.

Actually the GBA contains a Z80 co-processor (which is the same architecture from the GBC) that enables the GBA to run GBC games. The DS doesn't play GBC games because it only has two processors: the GBA's ARM7 and the ARM9. No co-processor means no GBC.

I won't argue that they're doing fine. Cutting a bunch of projects like the AIBO was a smart move. But stock price doesn't mean you're succeeding. I mean, look at what happened with the Web bubble 7 years ago. Regardless, Sony knows this is isn't a sprint. They can recoup their losses from the PS3 with enough time. It's just not the overnight success that the PS2 was. Same thing with Nintendo and the N64. If Sony sticks to their guns and learns from the experience then they will turn out fine in the long run.

Nintendo also has a 100 year history. Think of how much money they must have sitting aside for a rainy day. Pokemon, the DS and now the Wii have pretty much solidified that they're not going away anytime soon.

Unfortunately, Sony has been hemorrhaging money for the last few years. Remember a couple years ago when they slashed some divisions, like the AIBO group? Investor's are reacting to this, especially since the PS3 & Blu-ray were touted to be the saviors of the company.

How come there's a list on their website which states which games will and won't work with the PS3?

Software emulation will always take a small performance hit compared to hardware implementation because you have a layer of abstraction going on. Hardware emulation usually involves the previous generations chip still on the hardware. The GBA and DS do it. The PS2 did it. The Wii probably does it for Gamecube games.

  24. Changes nothing on $499 PlayStation 3 Confirmed · · Score: 1

This changes nothing. It does close the gap between the 60 gb and the 360's Pro system. However, offering an 80 gb version at $600 is stupid, since the Xbox 360 Elite edition (120 gb hard drive) + bundle is going for $560 at Gamestop/EB. This is nothing more than a pure sleight of hand by Sony's marketing group. I don't even know why they're bothering with the $600 model. For $100 more the XBox 360 Elite gets you HDMI, 100 GB more disc space and a free month of Live Gold. The new premium $100 upgrade for the PS3 nets you a free game (which you are essentially paying for because of feature #2) and an extra 20 GB. Woo hoo!

I'd never believe I'd be sitting here, a Wii owner, and pointing out that the 360 is still a better deal than the PS3.

Consumers aren't stupid Sony. Dropping the price of admission by 1/6th for a sinking ship, doesn't change the fact that you're still riding on a sinking ship.
