It was awesome here in Virginia Beach also! Stood out in front of my house and watched it with my son. He was so excited watching it. He woke up my wife to tell her all about it.
I have to admit that TITAN is one of the most depressing books I have ever read. Something terrible would happen and then just when you thought it could not get any worse, it does. On the other hand, there was just enough optimism at the end to make it enjoyable. I felt reading it was like driving by a horrific auto accident and not being able to look away. You feel like you have to know what will happen. But then there is not a single Steven Baxter book that I have read that I haven't liked.....
Um, his father was not ten when he died. he was 33. The scientist was 10 when his father dies.

Hmm this sounds just like the story in Stephen Baxter's novel "The Time Ships". It was a psuedo-sequel to H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine". The book tells about the time traveler and his attempt to return to his own time after his adventures in the first book, only to find things so out of wack. He then proceeds to travel forward and backward through time in an attempt to find hes "own slice of time". Great read! It basically looks at time travel but adding what we know about quantum physics and string theory in a very technical, but easy to read novel. Highly recomended!

On my last ship we had degaussing equipment inside the skin of the ship. Unfortunately there was a cable run in my "office" I couldn't count the number of times I would be playing something (SOF, QIII, UT, Deus Ex, System Shock2,etc) and have the equipment really screw up my monitor. (Mind you this was my personal PC as I had a couple of friends in the IT department) I never left the 'puter running if I was out of the office (which was a lot.. as many of nights getting off of watch and spending a couple of hours chasing mutant monkeys with a wrench...) as there would be a nice color display pattern waiting for me when I got back. I think I used the degaussing button more often than the power button....

Don't laugh, that might very well be the next step. How difficult would it be for a last minute admendment to any legislation (we all know how congress likes to do that) making it illegal to import any technological device which does not have "proper content control" in place.
