The userbase for GNU/Linux is the largest in all the Open Source OSes. Developers are shooting for the biggest audience. *BSD is certainly second in userbase numbers. Both appear in multiple variations to suit the needs of niche users. But, they are not monolithic in the many thousands of viable applications. The applications tend to be fast and light in the code, because they share support applications (ex: spellchecker is shared by 26 Office and editor, browser, programs).
Open Source is code done right, from the first line through the full release it is inspected, detected, and bad parts rejected, by millions of developers, coders, users.
Hey, it works for me, and for all of the Eastbrook Elementary kids, who prefer http://pclinuxos.com/ that you could run, so you would see how good FREEdom can be!
LiveCDrom Distros:
All my school kids start with http://pclinuxos.com/ and it's 5500 programs. Out the Box solution.
I use it. On at least a dozen of my systems, (8 of my systems are Mac OS9 and OS X).
On many of my dozens of older machines, http://knopper.net/knoppix rules, also!
Damn Small Linux is great for the really oldies, plus, for the absolute newest ones!
Firewall/router is http://ipcop.org/
I keep a single M$ XP Pro machine around, but, rarely spin it up. Maintenance (security, 7 protector programs, it wears out harddrives, prematurely!) isn't worth my time. Maybe if I was a "PC gamer". But, I do play some games on GNU/Linux.
Operating systems are tools to make the machine do work. I choose those that do the particular job best. Play, and learn, then choose!
It is about absolute freedom and ownership of MY DATA!
The NEXT burner I buy, that says it runs in Linux, had BETTER include "NERO for Linux"!
I consider all those marvelous, unused, 'windows', CDroms I have received with various equipment peripherals (that, quote, "Runs in linux, with third party drivers"), and consider that I had PAID for ALL of the included SOFTWARE, also, as part of the manufacturer/VAR marketing hype!
Hey, Nero! Trade you seven "Nero 'windows' CDroms", for one LINUX CDrom!
Now you tell me, roof my monolithic Dome!
on
Solar Shingles

I only just figured out about MY monolithic dome plans, zoning, and, land acquisition! Oh well, I could build a SHED to roof! Only need about $40 worth of power per month, anyway!

Runs in MP3!?!?! My RH9 boxen objects!!! So much for the Open in OSS! But, I had no trouble with the horizontal scrolling!
Need to do it in OggVorbis! DUH!
I bankrupted due to credit theft, over $1 million... They went to companies, I had never heard of, in other counties, and bought stuff to be delivered to a 'model' home in a developing neighborhood... and, ordered huge quantities of stuff, on the web... and, got checks, in the mail, that they cashed...
Now, restored to credit worthiness, new theives are trying, again! I only have one credit debt, now, a lumber company credit card so I can do repairs on my home! Car is paid off (cash, only!)
When I bought a house, the credit report was three pages for each of the three bureaus! two pages of each report were WRONG! My two pages each of corrections were mis-interpreted twice by the low pay staff at the three Credit Bureaus!
Finally, my Mortgage Broker, about to lose his fees, stepped in and personally telephoned, faxed, and worked with each bureau over two days!
Still a lot of incorrect stuff, but, I did get a home financed! And the incorrect stuff is too stupid to change...
I, too, am very pleased that justice has prevailed!
This is wonderful, and a brilliant story!
More, in every jurisdiction! If you lose, please note all the details! The EFF needs to get all these facts!
We will fight them in the trenches, and in the streets, etc... Winston Churchill was right, of course... the computer is MY real estate, for I bought it, I maintain it, I own it, and I run it the way I want to, in MY Castle!
OOPS. Just discovered that hard drives formatted in FAT16/32 FAIL seriously...mechanical failurs, not just crashes (so, please do not just quote http://www.bugtoaster.com to us!). Even when running any other OS on them, FAT formatted hard drives seem to fail prematurely, ATA drives failing in 3-4 month cycles!
Seeking MORE EXPANDED database for Quality Assurance testing as we have only 80 equipment histories for two years at this time...
Where is a Microsoft Mole when we need one, as this surely has been apparent in their equipment certification testing?! Another reason for the NDA?
Oh, right. M$ is a double convicted felon, U.S. and France... would you buy anything from a convicted Felon?
What guarantees do we have that Dell isn't loading up containers and shipping the problem to China?
Let's see, I can ship the container for $750. It holds 2,000 monitors/computer boxes. So, the profit margin is $29,250 per container... This concept has been going on, the prices have dropped...
The Recycling centers in Central Florida, take systems and products, and offer FREE computer parts, Aerosol spray cans of what ever has been inspected and is safe/useful...
You can go to the center, drop off/pick up what you want! There are lots of 'like new' products! Orange County Florida recycled over 80 tons of
spray cans last year, and I think the figure for computers is over 20 tons!
About a third of my 24 computers (of the past 2 years) are curbside units. I have paid as much as $10 each for 5 used Compaq Desktops, that I loaded with Linux and donated to the local food banks, churches, and charities. So, it would be really cool if the people paid ME to take, and recycle, this stuff! http://leap-cf.org is our LUG, and we refer to a group who does the recycling to schools, charities, on a large scale.
Everybody, do your share! 486's make good IPCOP Firewall/routers (up to a dozen hub-client nodes), and run headless! http://ipcop.org
Blind man's lawsuit under ADA of SouthWest Airlines is valid, because the W3C standards of ALL web sites
dictates plain text, plus alt tags for photos. http://anybrowser.com has lots of links and how-to's.
What kind of a business limits the many PDA users and the legally blind, from becoming their customer? A STOOPID one! SouthWest Airlines needs to fire the web author, certainly! Prooves there is no competent management outthere...
Every student in the Oscillator Block of Elec. 101
gets the lecture in Oscillators: "When we build an oscillator, chances are, that we will get a radio, and vice versa." The nature of the two are so similar, that a cold solder joint or other flaw,
could result in the error.
Sorta how humans came about, I bet. Nature, searching for a better ape for the expanding plains, created something that creates chaos. Yeah, Velociraptors are kinda cool...
Now, Pay something, for USE! You DID use the image, so give the artist a proper financial reward! You failed to research the sources of all images, etc. YOU failed to ask where the graphics came from.
Blame the daughter for 'giving' a graphic work to you...? You are responsible, as a scholar, to teach
ethics by example...
Nice that you apologized, but...? Mistakes have consequences...
Correcto Mundo! Micro$oft is now a huge Political
Monster, with it's own devices to generate income.
That is what is really to be feared! I'll stick to www.distrowatch.com , thank you! If a Federal judge has no chance... and, since 1986, over 200 small businesses have won copyright infringement
lawsuits against M$, and then were bought up by M$,
I have a new insight into the true meaning of "Extend, and Embrace".
I tremble to think of entering into it's maw, and I am retired (a forward area 'Rambo') from 20 years of genteel 'wars' (Police Actions, really, the term invented by liberals to manipulate us into a tranquility of emotional stupor about any political feeling). Go, Jesse Ventura! You don't stand alone! ( as long as we can...)nnnn
