I've never see a better, un-biased post concerning the state of the desktop. It is amazing to see all of the post concerning the m$ monopoly, and then they just want to replace that monopoly with another.
Its good to have choices. Use the best tool for the job. If I had mod points, I would mod your post up.
Trusted Network Connect, due for deployment at many residential ISPs by 2011, will ensure that your network will give your computer a routable IP address only if your computer is running an operating system that your ISP has approved and its TPM is active.
The Solaris version works pretty well on my SunRay desktop also!
RealPlayer 10 for Linux is several orders of magnitude better than any other version of RealPlayer I've used. There's no spyware/adware, it's fast and light, and they stick with a simple GTK UI instead of going off and writing some bizarre skinnable interface. If you're running Linux and you haven't tried RealPlayer lately, I'd highly recommend giving them a second chance.
If you don't think SPARC is a poorly designed processor you need to wake up from your trendy x86 bashing and smell some benchmarks done in the last 5 years. SPARC hasn't been competetive for a long time. The only reason it's still around is because of Solaris and the fact that it scales well when you want to use a very large number of processors. But with Sun investing in Opteron technology they will likely stop making SPARCs soon.
I'm not sure that they ever did develop SPARC processors completely? I know that TI did/does sparc processors for Sun. And I believe that now (or the near future) that Fujitsu will be Sun's primary CPU vendor
Really? Apple's Mac business model had never relied on having a significant market share, only a niche. Rolls Royces, Harley-Davidsons and Nikes cost far more than they are worth, yet people buy them. The snob market might be small, but it does exist and has proven profitable.
I'm sure Apple would rather not restrict itself to a purely snob niche by dropping Mac OS X entirely.
I really don't see how wanting/purchasing a system that generally works as advertised and doesn't crash every 15 minutes makes someone a snob?
Apple does not officially support the Unix command line, yet many of us use it extensively.
Where did this come from? Can you back this up with a URL?
GNU Make is certainly a wonderful tool, and as a Solaris admin of 10 years, it is typically a tool that I install on systems where I need to compile/install open source software but, I have compiled quite a bit of of open source software using
/usr/ccs/bin/make
Some applications have problems with the make that ships with Solaris, but most work fine.
My statement is is reference to the opening paragraph that states:
"Everyone who has ever compiled a piece of Open Source software has used GNU's make."
and don't forget server insanity!!

I lived in hawaii in the early 90's and there was a place on Nimitz Highway called "Thick and Juicy Pizza" that sold pizza and rented porno movies.
I have no idea if it is still there. I moved away in 1993.
Do you have a URL to back this up?
Thanks

They've already stopped developing future SPARC designs.
Also, isn't the SPARC CPU is a pretty open CPU
http://www.sparc.org/
compared to the intel/amd CPU's??
And there are quite a few companies that make SPARC based systems other than just Sun like
Tadpole
RDI
Fujitsu
Rave
NIS - I am typing this on a NIS UltraSparc II system
Aries
I know that there are others but that is all I can think of

I haven't seen anyone mention this one yet, but I have used GoLive on MacOS and MacOS X for several years with good luck.

I still use Yahoo. Sometimes I use Lycos. Both of these search engines meet all of my needs. I bet a lot of other people do also.
:)
There is nothing that says that for new search engine XXX to succeed, the old search engine YYY has to fail.
Its good to have choices.
Sun didn't give money to SCO to fight linux. Sun gave money to SCO for rights to allow the open sourcing of Solaris.
like in "Strange Brew"????
with a soldering iron....
from the movie Joe Dirt
FOUO = For Official Use Only
I use a Sun 3 button tombow mouse in my Powerbook.

What nasty bug? I have a Cobalt box that has been up for over a year.
Its not a game, this is something that you can get work done with.
