MS has banned the computers using massively leaked WinXP key from its "windows update" site. That means computers using the leaked key cannot get any updates and security fixes until a service pack comes out.
MS may do the same thing for this key as well. Also, as other posters have pointed out, companies are less likely to use pirated keys because of piracy and support issues.
Objectively speaking, the beta Raptor turns in impressively low noise floors, likely due to its single-platter design. A score of 40.4 approaches the noise floor delivered by the latest Barracuda ATA drives. Subjectively speaking, however, our sample emits an irritating high-pitched squeal reminiscent of early 10k RPM SCSI disks. The whine was audible even over the testbed's relatively loud drive cooler fans.
My current 7500rpm Segate drive makes noticeable amount of noise, this one is even noisier, why can't the drive manufacturers come up with some noise suppression case/jacket for the drives. For my new desktop I would rather go in for 2 low speed (4500rpm) drive in a RAID 0 configuration.
"Its confusing enough for new users and irritating to everyone else. Why do we need the K's and the gears to proclaim "We own your computer!" Thats what Microsoft does and is one reason I have turned away. Let us brand our own computers, or better yet, leave the system unbranded. They are only tools, after all."
Are you suggesting that 'KDE' project should change its name to 'DE' and 'Sirtaj Singh Kang' should change his name to 'Sirtaj Singh Ang'?;)
No sir, I have *never* sent an encrypted email in my life. But I have used it to encrypt files on the hard disk. The issue here is that the product will stop working and *according to them* you will lose access to your files.
Of course you can make backup of your keys/data, dcrypt your files before the beta expires or upgrade your software to the final version but all that *is not mentioned* in the desclaimer. I read the disclaimer as "test our product on our conditions and at our mercy".
VERY IMPORTANT: The PGP 8.0 Public Beta will expire on Friday, December 6th, 2002. Once the expiration date has been reached, the software will disable itself completely, thereby inhibiting access to encrypted data. Please plan accordingly.
"plan accordingly" -- yes I will. I plan not to become your free beta tester. Thanks but, no thanks.
Intergraph was so confident they even have a FAQ on their site about the case here.
From the FAQ...
Intergraph's patented PIC technology permits multiple processor operations to occur simultaneously, thereby significantly increasing processor performance. We believe that these patents are fundamental to parallel instruction computing and are specifically embodied in Intel's IA-64 architecture.
...and that's why you should actually use those MD5 checksums, instead of unpacking and installing without thinking.
Although I agree that you should check the MD5SUMs of all the software you download, the advisory says that the sendmail FTP server was compromised, the intruders could have easily uploaded new MD5 checksums along with the source code, I am surprised they didn't.
Integrated graphics have their advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages
- Cheap because most of the integrated solutions use OLD graphics chips (ATI Rage, Nvidia G-Force2 MX, Matrox G400)
- No installation required
- Good for OEMs
Disadvantages
- Newer integrated graphics mobos are costly like the Nvidia NForce range
- Not enough power to handle the demands of serious gamers and professional artists
- Upgrades will be costly because one would have already paid for the graphics in the mobos price, also once you upgrade, integrated graphics will need to be disabled and becomes useless
- Technical problems with integrated graphics will be impossible to fix
Although this guy has only circumvented the encryption by using Print Scrn type of approach, I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually breaks the Microsoft reader encryption in 30 minutes. After all Brian Valentine, the senior VP of Microsoft has admitted that: "Microsoft products just aren't engineered for security"
No I disagree -- India might not be as sophisticated and wealthy as some of the other nations but the article talks about a Satellite Launch, which puts India along with a handful of other nations (USA, Russia, France, China and Japan) who can do this.
I completely agree with other posters and feel that...
"These 8 hour days have to stop, we need to be working 15 hours a day
and weekends, balls to the wall."... this indicates your manager is
a wanker and making serious mistakes in estimates or he is under pressure
from top management. Working more than 8 hours is *not a solution* to the
problem.
"We are heavily under-staffed"... your company might be in financial
difficulty. You need to start looking for a new job.
I was in a similar situation a month ago and now I'm laid off, unemployed
and looking for a job.
I just noticed one more thing that has changed inside yahoo's 'Edit Member Information' page.
You are no longer allowed to change your birthdate. The field to change birthdate looks like following...

Security reasons??? What security reasons?? I guess the next thing they will do is publish our email addresses to every known spammer on the face of the earth and disable the option to opt-out of it. (For security reasons, of course!!)

How many do you want??
By the way check out this article (IDE-RAID With Notebook Drives: Quick And Quiet).

First the story about logo segway and a link to geocitiies, and now a story about BSD and a link to a CVS log entry!
With warnings like this, nobody will upgrade and no errors/security holes will come out ;).
I think if you check the MD5/PGP signatures you should be fine.

PGP is only for windows and macs, for linux try GnuPG -- complete and free replacement for PGP. There are front-end available for windows as well.
From the FAQ...
...it contains the graphical environments Gnome and KDE, as well as software packages such as OpenOffice.org, XMMS and Mozilla.

Sorry! Didn't read the note at the top of the demo page!
Here is an easy fix,
...
...
1. In Mozilla goto
'Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Script & Plugins'
2. Uncheck the following checkboxes
'Ceate or change cookies' and 'Read Cookies'
After changing this goto the demo page again to verify! The demo will not work anymore.
The editors are reading slashdot. I just re-submitted the same story again and it instantly got rejected (no kidding).
