    Not quite! I browse through an ad killing "proxy" server ("ProximaBob") that sends fake referrers as necessary.

    For example, when I hit a tripod site, it sets the referrer to tripod.com so that the images show up.

    People who program for a living appreciate the extra pixels!

    The limited resolution of most flat-screens has kept me away from them, though I know a number of people who simply run two of them on their XP boxes.

    When you write software, you need a lot of space for the source code, the debugger, the application, the documentation, etc. 1280x768 just doesn't cut it.

    Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for the price to drop--or wait for my NEC 23 inch CRT to fail, whichever comes first.

    But fully half of their links in any category are dead.

    How hard would it be for Yahoo to spider all the sites in their directory to keep it fresh?

    In fact, Patrick Naughton who told me that he was an inventor of Java, used the language to hunt down little girls on the internet.

    As part of a plea, he used Java to trap his former friends in an FBI sting.

    Any computer expert could look at the Java language and see its child-molestor roots. That's why I don't use Java, and I prohibit anyone on my staff from using it.

    One more thing: If you like Java, you too must be a pedophile.

    Instead of the usual "brain drain" that some countries have (the former soviet union, Israel), China's having a reverse brain-drain.

    For the past few years, they've been sending their DUMBEST people over here to work as computer programmers (or "ploglammels").

    Stupid American management, in an attempt to save a few bucks, hires these low-cost H1B Chinese ploglammers. Consumers see the result in poor quality software.

    If I look at whose working at companies that ship crappy software, like Roxio CD-Creator (which breaks Windows XP), or Real Player, you'll see a majority of Chinese workers.

    This is a real attempt of China to undermine American quality and our software development industry.

    You're absolutely right.

    These widgets are the FIRST STEP in the master plan by cable companies to replace the phone company.

    Why is that so bad? Have you ever read the Terms of Service on your cable IP service? Do you know how insecure cable IP is? (And don't try to encrypt! We all know that Comcast forbids VPNs.)

    Stick with the PHONE COMPANY to make PHONE CALLS.

    Why has slashdot become a forum for Macintosh "aplologists?"

    There used to be true discourse here, but about 18 months ago all that changed.

    I'm not against Macs---I have one here and I like it---but it's not perfect. And OS-9 really is quite bad. It's very similar to Windows 3.1 in its architecture (no protected memory, memory handles, cooperative multitasking, etc.)

    I applaud Apple's attempt to make a commercially viable version of Unix. It's great to have a BSD-like OS that I can run real applications on. But it needs a little work.

    Too bad /. users get their panties in a knot when someone tells the truth!

    It's because OS-X is a 1969-era operating system (UNIX) written to run on top of an 1984 OS (MacOS) that still has its core components running on a 68000 simulator!

    Mac zealots love to say "windows is just a dos extender that runs on a 16-bit processor" but the real truth is that Mac is much,much worse.

    Another reason they surf slowly is there's only one mouse button. I use my mousewheel all the time to scroll. If I only had one button, it would take longer.

    Finally, the most important reason is that most sites were optimized for Windows.

    (Also, maybe mac *users* are just a tad slow!)

    It's not surprising that the FAGGOTS here with their MACINTOSHES would get the word "INFLAMMABLE" wrong.

    In fact, the back-formation "FLAMMABLE" was created because too many stupid DEMENTED people were thinking that "INFLAMMABLE" meant fireproof.

    That use of "inflammable" to mean fireproof is PROOF POSITIVE that SLASHDOT readers are IDIOTS.

    I don't like it if people who work for me waste time browsing the web.

    The problem is with the picking and choosing.

    It's really much better just to stop all outside web access in the work environment. This way you don't have to decide which sites are "acceptable" and which aren't.

    Actually, if Apple were the "dominant" platform, its virus problem would be just as bad.

    Back in 1989-1990, when Mac lead in Desktop Publishing, Mac viruses were an awful problem.

    The only reason virus writers don't concentrate on the Mac is that the viruses will spread faster on Windows. There's no magic technology on the Macintosh (face it, the machine is pretty gay) that makes it immune.

    I used to work for a large shrink-wrap software company, and many more Mac users pirated our software than PC users.

    Mac users are crazy zealots, not unlike the Taliban, who lie and steal. Many are also HOMOSEXUAL.
