Telling them that it will be OK to slide on the documentation for the video drivers just as long as they do X, Y & Z would be a real disservice to them. The blob just isn't an option any more. Telling people which versions of Linux they can use the video cards with is equivalent to telling Windows users they all have to use Vista if they want to use NVidia hardware. For me right now all of their cards are the equivalent of a 10 year old 2D Cirrus card but with a stupid high price tag attached to it.
Get it straight. Every thing takes a back seat to opening up the documentation for the video drivers. My money stays with AMD until they yank their heads out of their....
When patches come out only once a week or year for some products rebooting isn't an issue. But in the Linux world patches flow like water. If you need to be rebooting all the time that is going to kill one of the great security strengths of Linux. That is the credo of patch fast and patch often.
That is my big fear as well. I could live with Fedora doing this stupid thing. But if RHEL, Centos and Oracle go down the same road that is a real problem for server admins. If they don't follow suite then RHEL and crew suffer because they will have lost one of their main advantages. A large beta testing community called Fedora.
Seriously some one at RedHat has to sit the Fedora guys down and have a talk with them.
Actually this is the Solaris model just like moving every thing under/usr was the Solaris model. If people think Solaris is the greatest thing ever then use Solaris stop wrecking Linux to make it be like Solaris. There is a reason why Linux won and Solaris died.
Normal Chinese citizens are not allowed to take money out of China. Many would like to do that just in case things go bust or the political scene changes. There is a loop hole however. Chineese students can take vast sums of money out of China if it is to help them learn abroad. The last previous condo I was renting was worth ~$700,000. The owner a 20 year lady from China studying at UBC. Lots of Chinese parents use their kids to get money out of the country.
I have to agree prioritizing is key. Fires are live creatures and can go from bad to disastrous in a flash. Get the data first which includes databases, file servers etc.
When it comes to packing if you have limited packing supplies focus on the most critical and hard to replace stuff first. If you don't have enough stuff to package every thing then at least make sure that nothing can move around or fall over in the truck. All most every thing is built tough enough to handle a trip down even a mountain road as long as you drive slow and stuff isn't falling over and rubbing against each other. Every thing can be a packing supply. Coats, boxes. blankets, carpet, string, rope, cables etc.
Good luck and if you feel up to it give us an update when you are done.
There is virtually universal agreement among scientists that the sea will probably rise a good meter or more before the end of the century, wreaking havoc in low-lying coastal counties. So the members of the developers’ lobbying group NC-20 say the sea will rise only 8 inches, because because well, SHUT UP, that’s because why.
Who is actually telling people to shut up here? When you wheel out the old "The science is settled" argument and tell people that you can not dare to question the science any more you have admitted that you have failed. As usual there are scientists questioning the party line. Link
Iran's ground forces are some of the strongest in the region and they have considerable missile arsenal. They are far stronger than Iraq or Afghanistan both of which just defeated NATO. People can make fun of Iran all they want but the top priority in the US and the EU even before the economy is the threat that Iran supposedly poses an existential threat against a country with between 100 and 200 nuclear weapons. So mock all you want.
I have to wonder if they could make natural gas work on a ship. Especially the LNG carriers. With Nat Gas below $2 per tcf lately some one must be looking at it.
I agree it is completely impractical. Any one that has owned or worked on a boat knows the life span of all those electronics is going to be very, very short.
The fastest circumnavigation boats are all sail powered. The 24 hour record for the Volvo Ocean race for example is just over 40 knots or nearly 50 miles an hour. Sails = way less cost, way less maintenance, better longevity, don't make the decks unusable. The only thing solar is good for is powering the navigation, radio's and lights.
When your product has no history shouldn't every week be record sales? It's like the global warming scare head lines about record temperatures, as long as you ingnore the 99.9% of the earths history when we weren't taking temperatures.
With the high number of abandoned wind farms I can't say I like the job security aspects of this. It might make a good summer job but I sure wouldn't plan a career around it.
So Street View is a problem and an invasion of privacy. But flying over head taking pictures might not be? All that has to happen is Google puts their logo on the side of a drone and Microsoft will get their politicians to make using drones illegal. Problem solved.
That this comment got moded up to 5, shows us just how far Slash Dot has degenerated since the early years. I guess that is why I don't come around here much any more.

Beat me to it.
I'm sorry but that will have to wait until the work on the new GNome registry is done. Oh wait. They already have that. Bring on the DLL's.

Couldn't agree more on this one.

I second that LOL.
Let us know how they work out on Windows 8.
Personally I stopped buying NVidia gear a few years ago because of their attitude.
Funny video by the way. I would love to hear NVidia's response.
That is pure wisdom on display.

This article over at Foreign Policy is a good read to see how much of a threat Iran really is. And why every one if focused on the wrong threat.Story
What about when the salt water eats the electronics?

Yes you are absolutly right about the damage and here is the proof right here.
