when i was a child watching cbs or abc news, i can remember how full of shit they were! that's why i watch public television and listen to public radio, and i'm not talking about so-called cable public stations! There are realiable source out there, if you're complaining about the those corporate sources not being news worthy, then stop turning to them for news already dummy!
my advice is to go to school. not because you need it for your career, but, you're young and should enjoy yourself, take some art classes, meet some people and enjoy yourself while you can, servers will wait for you, besides with the market being so bouncy, you really don't know how stable of a job you might be able to get, i'm stuck in this industry, but if i could do it all over again, i'd go to law school, and do this for fun!
is/usr/local obsolete? as far as i knew it still exists in red-hat also. please tell me if i'm mistaken. as far as packages, i've never been able to use only rpms with a red hat installation. actually, most of my red-hat experiences led me to use more source-style installations than packages, as i always have tons of dependency issues and it's just easier to do everything by hand with source code.(i never have those problems with debian, by the way) anyway, maybe this article is good but that's as far as i could get through it...
Just delete them is not a solution, you probably don't pay for bandwith for any large email servers. It's sort of like someone coming into your office making thousands of copies using you're toner, paper, power, then using your postal machine to tack 34cents off for each and dropping them in your outbox for the mailman. a bit far fetched? maybe, but not to far!
it really sucks about loki, but i don't believe that this is going to hurt linux gaming in any way, if anything, we can thank loki for paving the way. since loki there have been several ports to linux not involving loki in any way, ie wolfenstein and strike force. although they're only linux binaries to use win versions with, they still run better under linux, as linux handles processes and memory much better and of course uses only opengl. I believe game companies are starting to catch on. Besides someone will pick up where loki left off.
very good point, however, with everyone having diferent video cards, keyboards, mice(usb/aux/bus),joysticks, net cards, then you need opengl not to mention xlibs, which is huge, well we can see we would run out of space fast for a cd. it would be nice though?
You should try window maker, it never crashes, there's not much to it is why. It's been around a while and doesn't get or need updates frequently so it's never bugged out on me yet! also there the new version of evolution from ximian is great. With wmaker you can still intall qt libs and gtk and gnome libs and run your old favs without the hassle of gnome nor kde! Try wmaker it's simple, lightweight, and insanely stable. i reboot here at work, well i don't actuall i shut down on friday nights. i just logout(which doesn't actually restart x, every other evening. it's rare for me to reboot! just some suggestions for ya...

i also suggest selling your house and moving every two years to avoid junk mail...
