  2. I would be one of the first people to buy this on Laser HUD Projected on Retina · · Score: 1

And the possibility of retinal damage doesn't concern me all that much. Why? Because there's a whole lot worse out there. I'm not sure on the specifics, but I'm fairly sure a device like this must use a very very low powered laser to work, that and coupled with the fact that the feds would never let something like this out on the public market if it had a tendency to cause blindness assures me that it's fairly safe.

As for that one in a million chance that I go blind, have you read the side effects listed on some of your favorite pills? Flu? Diareah? Ulsers? Internal Bleeding? Some how a loss of vision (which most likely will be caught before I go completely blind) doesn't seem half as bad.

Even the above technical reasons (all very good reasons) why this won't be a problem miss one thing. The article said that the images produced can be seen clearly by the legaly blind (how blind that is, who knows) but in that case, just transmit real world images to the laser and it wouldn't matter if you'r blind

Needless to say, we all purged our bookmarks after the incident. ;)

Let me tell you, I worked EUC (End User Computing, a fancy name for troubleshooter) for a rather large and well known company (who shall remain nameless) and while it is true that we were working for the company and working on company time, it was a welcome breather durring lunch and inbetween the calls ("my computer doesn't work!") to be able to sit back and cruise slashdot, or spiffo (spiffo.co.uk) or other sites to get a good laugh or catch up on the days geek news. Some days there just wasn't enough work to justify us being there (shhh, don't tell them I said that) but we had to be there, and slashdot saved us many a dull hour

  10. That's why you do what Ambrosia does on More On Policing Shareware · · Score: 1

Even Ambrosia realizes that their high quality programs (which IMHO is worth the $30 they usualy charge), will get pirated by people that want it cheaper. That's why once or twice a year, Ambrosia has "Forgiveness Week" (or something to that effect) and for that week, any registration you buy is only $10. That way, they get a bunch of the cheapskates who otherwise wouldn't pay, to pay them for a code.

  13. When will they learn on Where Music Will Come From · · Score: 1

When will people learn that the internet did not come about as a method of making money. And the way it's designed it was never intended to be a money making medium.

The earliest forms of the internet were simply methods of distributing information from one area of a business (of the government) to another.

It's other aspects came out off BBS's which were *FREE* services designed to make communication and the transfer of information easier. The only cost was the cost of connecting to the board.

Why then should the information which gets placed on a medium designed for the free distribution of information then get charged for. If the NYT want's to make money off of their stories, they should go sell newspapers. (and yes I know they do)

The courts have already ruled on Apple. Back in the 80's Apple Computer Inc was taken to court by Apple Records for violating their trademark.

The courts ruled that since the two legal names were Apple Computer Inc and Apple Records, and since they were in two different industries, no one would be confuse the two.

As I understand it, trademarks simply protect another competitor from using your name or tag line. In this case, Microsoft technicaly can claim violation, but because Windows is such a generic term, it is unlikely they will win.
