Just a followup... I realize that chemical energy is also producing some of the light, but I think the temperature required in order to get iron and stone to react chemically with the air speaks for itself. Care to look up the boiling point of iron?

Ever hear the phrase "Don't believe everything you read"?
The sources you quote are a lot of rehashed BS. Note how the wording is nearly identical in each. Obviously copied by someone who doesn't have a clue about physics... (probably just a Ph.D.;)
"... very cold and they remain so even as they blaze a hot-looking trail..."
hot-looking??? Just what do they think is causing all that bright white light to be given off anyway? It's called BLACK BODY RADIATION! It means that the surface of the object emitting the light is thousands of degrees. The specific temperature can be determined directly from the light's most intensely emitted frequency.
Most meteorites litterally burn up in the atmosphere on re-entry, leaving at mosts tiny specs that fall as dust. These are solid rock and iron and their surfaces don't just flake off like a piece of pie crust.
Now, the core temperature of the object and it's temperature on impact is another matter, but those quotes are WAY off base.
Thanks for the info. I've never run across this definition of time-travel before. Sure sounds like it could make a bit of a mess if it became a popular technology, what with everyone resetting the universe all over the place. Could make it hard for a body to get anything done.;)
If Pi is truly random, then all information exists within it somewhere.
Whoa there!
First off, Pi isn't random at all. It's digits are completely deterministic based on fundamental mathematical law.
Secondly, just because the digits of Pi are non-repeating and non-terminating doesn't imply that all sequences will be contained in it, even though it may seem that way to a casual observer.
Thirdly, you are obviously having some mathematical delusions about the meaning of the term "information". Let me guess... you're NOT a computer scientist. If you were, you'd understand that a sequence of numbers like you're talking about can only be considered information in a reference context. For example, if I have a certain sequence of digits, which generally could be in any base or any length, but for simplicity let's say they are decimal 322985996577. Well, what information is this? Hmmmm... Is it your age in milliseconds? Is it my calling card number? Maybe it's just says "K3w1!" in ASCII.
The simple fact is that its MEANING depends entirely on a reference context. ie. By itself, it has NO meaning.
While the concept of time travel is pretty cool (especially for sci-fi), I honestly believe it to be complete bull.
Here's my proof against time-travel:
Suppose that at some point in the future, time travel becomes possible, and someone decides to time travel back to my office here at 11am August 26, 2002. Well, I tell you that they CAN'T. I was at that space-time coordinate as an observer and I recorded that no time-traveler arrived.
If they are precluded from traveling to my particular place and time, then what's so special about my office at that time compared to any other space-time coordinate? Nothing.
Arguments?
But everyone knows that time travel changes the past... If you buy this, please try to explaing the word 'change' without using a reference to time. Sci-fi shows often show this happening, and you end up saying thins like "you mean the past BEFORE it changed the first time, or...".;)
Of course if you believe in the Sliders-like interpretation of infinite parallel universes then things are different, although I suspect that's bogus as well.:)
I once had a teacher so terribly incompetent, that she made things up to answer my questions rather than admit ignorance.
My younger brother in 5th grade related to me the following...
His teacher's lecture that day had been on how "All non-living things are made of atoms." A student in the class offered "But I thought all things, both living and non-living are made of atoms." His teacher replied that "Oh no, living things are made of cells."
1. To gain especially for the performance of service, labor, or work: earned money by mowing lawns.
2. To acquire or deserve as a result of effort or action: She earned a reputation as a hard worker.
I really don't think either of those defenitions applies to this situation.:)
... you've committed fraud, against the consumer who thought they were buying a book in its entirety
Hello?! These companies aren't doing anything like that! They ADVERTISE that they're selling EDITED versions! That's why people pay EXTRA to have memberships there. You can call it a lot of things, but it's not fraud.
Bullshit. You can still fast-forward through the movie, what you can't do is sell a book with thirty pages ripped out of the middle, unless authorized by the publisher.
Why not? I see such dammaged books for sale at Salvation Army type stores. So, you think that should be illegal?
The important thing is that people KNOW they're only getting part of it and WANT it that way!
Should I be able to take a poster, tear it in half and sell you half of it?
The end result of these pre-edited movies is no different than if I hired someone who knows the movie to come to my house and run the fast-forward/mute controls on my VCR for me.
Suppose I create a technology that allows me to do precisely that. Would it make a difference to you over selling pre-edited versions?
So, suppose I create a file type that contains info on what parts of a specific DVD to skip/mute and I also compile a DVD player that can load that file type and use it to edit the DVD on the fly as I watch it.
Do you think it would be illegal for me to share this file? Sell it?
How is this significantly different from selling the pre-edited versions? Well, the original still has the full content, so it CAN be viewed that way if desired, but don't you think you should be able to buy just part of the film? If not, do you also think you shouldn't be allowed to sell used CDs if they have bad tracks (since this is effectively also only selling parts of the original)?
Personally, I think this would be a GREAT open source project! We could have an open-source repository of the 'edit-files', and you could download Joe_Shmoe's_G_version of The Matrix (running time 15 minutes:) or anybody else's idea of what things should be left out.
There are plenty of films I love except for one or two lame bits.
Java 1.4 ROCKS! Very fast and seems to improve greatly with each new release. Our company is using it exclusively for our flagship product. Java has quickly become my language of choice for most programming matters.
My freshman year, I bought some used power supplies from the lab at my EE class. They each had 3 167000mfd 12V caps. Once they were charged, you could touch a screwdriver across the terminals and it would be instantly welded right onto the terminals.:) Made pretty big sparks too.:)
I also tried making a 20kv glass plate cap once for my tesla coil... Worked pretty well until I got a few big discharges and blew a few panes to pieces.:) ALWAYS wear your safety glasses!:)
NOTE: CDs don't spin with constant angular velocity. Even when playing a music CD at 1x, the angular velocity varies between 200 and 500 rpm in an attempt to keep the linear velocity (data-rate) constant.
Sorry to hear about your company's chosen development path.
Here at my company, we created our flagship product using Sun's JAVA. It's a large java client application that connects via socket to a custom high speed unix database. It's a very vertical (read: expensive) application and we initially targeted Windows platforms and didn't do any special cross-platform work. When R&D tried to run it on a Linux system, it worked without a hitch! Sales have gone up dramatically and our company's outlook has never been better. Our latest version will be out soon and uses the 1.4 JVM.
Of course, because of all the crap that MS is pulling, our installer includes the Sun JVM on the disk.:)
It was my understanding the reason WinXP didn't ship with Java is cause Sun complained!
That's the Microsoft propoganda, but it's all lies (well at least VERY missleading). What Sun did was to get a court order saying that after a certain date Microsoft couldn't ship their bastardized JVM and keep calling it Java when it was non-compliant (Ever heard the term Embrace-and-Extend?). Microsoft could have included any Java compliant JVM and been fine (except for the fact that Java is a threat to the Windows monopoly).
Instead, they issued a press release making it sound like they were dropping support for java because they were forced to by Sun, when in reality Sun was only forcing them to be standards compliant.
Sun did the Right Thing(tm) IMHO, in using their legal rights to keep Microsoft from coopting and breaking the Java standard as they have with so many other protocols.
If I ever buy a DVD that has unskippable adds or previews, I immediately take it back to the store for a refund.
If the studios get enough returns, they'll either have to put a warning label on it, or just put up with the lost revenue. (my guess is they'll take that second option over loosing any kind of control of the masses)

No. He thinks "computer=TV-like thing with that box attached to it" :)
Most people don't see it that way for a good reason. By the most common defenitions of the word earn, to earn implies deseving.
I really don't think either of those defenitions applies to this situation. How about a system where the patent office hires people who are at least SOMEWHAT knowlegeable in the subjects they're granting patents over.
Also require them to do at least ONE google search for prior art! :)
Don't you mean "an opportunity to make money"?
There is a slight difference. :)
Yes, he called the device a tele-geodynamic oscilator, and had both electrically driven and one driven by compressed gas.
