Here's what I don't understand about the stuff that costs thousands of dollars: supposedly this is because they are capital goods and they are charging this to game companies, movie studios, what have you. But then every individual who wants it either doesn't use it or obtains an illegal copy.

Why don't these companies just make two different licenses, a "personal" license and a "corporate" or "business" license, and sell the personal version at like 50 bucks a pop and leave the corporate one at $1000+. Most businesses would still pay the $1000+ because they've got the money and they don't want to get in shit for illegally using software, and many (normal) people would rather go to the store and buy a box with CDs, manuals, etc., than wait for a 1200 MB download to finish and then have to burn CDs and try to figure out how to use the program from crappy "tutorials" written by people whose first language is clearly not English.

do you go to the grocery store and only actually pay for what you think is reasonable and just kindly ask the cashier to let you walk out with the rest

If she likes you and nobody else is there some stuff just accidentally might not get scanned.

Piracy is making illegal copies and then selling them.

Theft is not paying for something.

So, what we are talking about here is theft.

Actually, that quote is in reference to a scene from Fight Club, a movie starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.
