  1. Re:Get over yourself ESR! on ESR Gets Job Offer From Microsoft · · Score: 1

    Pompous?

I dunno... after watching the "Steve Jobs Return to Apple, The "Microsoft saves Apple investment" of $150M (When Apple had 2 Billion in the bank), The agreement for the production of Microsoft Office for the Mac, followed by the wildly spun press.... "Microsoft saves Apple"

Along with the Microsoft buyout of Dayna, ResNova (This actually put my company out of business), and the Quicktime code found in a Media Player Library....

Well I guess when I see these things, and they alter my professional life, My professionalism tends to more or less go away.

    I'm pissed.

Mostly because in the "American Business Sense" there has to be the idea that there is "room for everybody" where true competition can take place well beyond PR "spin". Once a company (like a convicted monopolist) is allowed to maintain a near monopoly and maintain it through "embrace and extend" and self funded studies claiming their superiourity- well the system fails and *everyone (including the monopolist) suffers. The consumers suffer now, and the monopolist eventually dies from (in this case) being trumped by near free software and indignant software enginers.

Sometimes, it's best just to say it like it is.

AND RFCs exists for a reason.

    I remember this...

I dumped Trend Micro for AVG (if I remember correctly) over this issue.

I actually pay for my AVG licenses simply because I can afford to and good companies need to be kept alive.

Now strangely I wonder what will come of this. I don't really like doing business with either Intel *or* Microsoft. Though to be fair, Intel is certainly not Microsoft- who in mymind sets the standard for sleeze.

  5. WOW isn't the problem... on WoW Helping or Hurting the Industry? · · Score: 1

As somone else may have pointed out, the problem in the game industry is internal. Game quality has fallen, and in the MMO frenzy things like AI have been pushed to the side. I'd figure that the MMO scene is the catalyst for the problems in the game publishing world. Though it is also just a harbinger of change. After all, why create a game that you sell once for $50.00 when you can get $50.00 and a monthly stipend to boot.

  6. Re:Simpler explanation: on Another Star Wars Prequel? · · Score: 1

I believe this is incorrect. The relative speeds of both the ship and it's occupants are the same. So the malfunctioning of artificial gravity should simply result in a weightless state for the occupants. However, it could also be argued that g-forces created by the ship going out of orientation and falling into the gravity well of the planet were to blame for the percieved gravity shift. After all, there is change of velocity and change of direction causing both cetrifical and sheering forces. Thus the only way for us to know for certain, is to cripple a frigate class warship in orbit and make valid observations.
