  1. Re:Its a matter of perspective on Pay vs. Happiness · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's time to challenge your assumptions. A large income can be spent on things besides the frivolities you mentioned. Healthcare has become increasingly expensive, and, unless you and your family don't mind suffering from untreated illnesses, good health insurance, and the money to supplement it if your plan doesn't think you need something, are going to require some serious money. Then there's education. Perhaps one of the most important things a parent can provide for their child is a good, solid education. Aside from increasing their earning power, it will allow them to get more interesting, rewarding work as well as provide opportunities for them to meet interesting people. These days even a good State School could cost 15k or 20k, per child, in tuition alone. When you throw in living costs, books, etc. you're talking about serious money. Graduate or Professional school? Throw on another 75 to 120k depending on what your kids want to do. Money is also useful when disaster strikes. Say, for example, your entire city becomes submerged in water and your insurance company screws you. Having a big income and a stable job can make that situation, while still awful, lot easier. You can't use money to buy your way to happiness, but you can can use it to buy your way out of all sorts of miseries and stressors.

PDAs, particularly Palm based PDAs have been ill-served by their excellent default custom software. That stuff is good enough to prevent the average user from seeking new and better things for their palms. The market will expand when developers create custom PDA based solutions that businesses really need. Once that's happening, the number of people who have them, or see other people having and using them will increase. The benefits of greater penetration are obvious/
If you think I'm nuts, just remember that most people used a computer for the first time at work, not at their Geek friend's house. I suspect that Palm market penetration will grow similarly.

  3. Re:Thats not the problem on RMS: Putting an End to Word Attachments · · Score: 1

All computers that come with MS Word also come with Notepad, which is easier to use (it's nothing more than a text box) and it spits out plain old ASCII text. It doesn't have all the formatting that MS Word power-users take advantage of, but we're primarily concerned with John Q. Public who probably uses word exactly as he'd use Notepad anyway. The power-users will be able to use Word to convert to whatever other format is desired. WHich brings up the real issue.
Having a standard, formatted text file-format (like mp3 for audio, jpeg for images, mpeg for video etc.) that is platform independent would make this much more effective. PDF would be good, but most people don't know how to make them.
