  1. The magazines are right... on NIH Proposes to Open Tax-Funded Research · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's simple in my view... the tax-payer pays for the research and the magazine-subscriber pays for the peer-review and the consequent confidence in the ACCURACY of the research. Separating the funding of these two activities is important - it ensures that responsibilities for each are not mixed, and that there is no conflict of interest. This is in the best interests of all, especially at a time when science/scientists seem to be regarded with some suspicion by the public (due largely to ill-informed/educated media hyperbole).

  2. Re:Pricing on DSI Delivers up to 3GB/s with Solid State Disk · · Score: 1

I write a trading system that connects to Eurex - and DB performance (determined by disc access and io speed predominantly) is one of the major system issues. This is better than RAM because persistent storage is critical for transactional control and auditing, (imagine the consequences if you are not sure whether a trade has been placed or not!). I've made a careful note to investigate this in detail tomorrow with our infrastructure guys!

  3. Could he do the Hobbit like The Godfather Part II? on Peter Jackson Says "Hobbit" Movie In The Works · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't know how much there is the The Hobbit as a movie - it's not on the epic scale of any of the LOTR trilogy, and is pretty linear as a tale. How about interspersing scenes from the Hobbit with the "missing scenes" from LOTR when Frodo and co get back to the Shire and find Saruman as the new leader! Basically - make the film a prequel and sequel. I think it would work really well, (apart from in ROTK you already know the final conclusion of Frodo sailing away from the Havens).

  4. Re:The world needs OEM-installed commodity Linux on Michael Robertson of Lindows Responds · · Score: 1

I bought a Sony laptop with Win XP this weekend: 1) Took it out of the box 2) Plugged it in and pressed the "on" switch 3) Typed in my new user name 4) Started browsing via my WLAN Total time taken: 2 minutes. Linux has some way to go to reach that level of convenience for all but a very few, specific, hardware platforms, (e.g. Lindows PCs).

  5. Re:Why DRM is going to fail...by Microsoft on Attempts To Stop Music Sharing Pointless? · · Score: 1

    2002-11-22 18:00:32 Music-swapping pointless according to MS (articles,music) (rejected)

    beat u to it ;-)

still waiting for my 1st aricle to be accepted... but my /. ambition will be so sweet when i finally get to taste it.

  6. Nothing wrong with logging in principle on UK ISPs Refuse to Monitor Users · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have no problem with ISPs logging usage, or that data being used by law enforcement agencies, but there *HAS* to be some governance, oversight and control. It's no good asking ISPs to log the information without clearly explaining the cost implications, who will meet the cost, and ensuring in law that they are allowed and protected in doing so. Furthermore, to inspect the data law enforcement agencies should require a court-issued warrant. Blunkett's plans earlier this year allowed all manner of agencies (even the post office for god's sake) access to this type of information, under unspecified "supervision" of an official. Thank goodness that got canned, (at least for the time being). It is simply not good enough for governments to increase their own power without similarly increasing the protection and rights afforded to the people against that power.

  7. Re:The oscars aren't about the best films... on LoTR Takes 4 Oscars · · Score: 1

Totally agree, and the evidence this year supports it. Out of the nominees for best picture, only one could be considered "Hollywood production" in the sense that finance, concept, prodcution, etc all came out of California. All of the rest were essentially foreign with at best funding from the US. ( A Beautiful Mind ,Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge). The Oscars are about Hollywood congratulating itself on being the centre of the universe, and so anything that appears to subvert that could never win. Hence A Beutiful Mind won by default, rather than by merit.
