    Except that if you have to sign an NDA to view the source code, then you can't implement the same protocols in your software because of the NDA. The EU didn't ask for the source code, what they want is them to open the protocols !
    Actually people who want to implement theses protocols have to stay away from the source code as much as possible, or they could be accused of copyright infrigment. With this, MS try to prevent people from writing software using the same protocols, which is actually the opposite of what the EU wants.

    One of my friend had a box running an obsolete OS (something called Windows XP I think), and it got infected by a virus only a few minutes after beeing connected to the internet.
    So no, security throught obsolescence is not always working.

    Ho yes that's true. In my opinion we should completly ban any phone service as this can be used by terrorists.
    And I heard some terrorists use the internet to communicate too, so let's shut down the internet ASAP to avoid a terrorist attack. I'm sure this will decrease terrorism.

    I tried Digg, but I didn't like the feel of it. Democracy, to me, is not a good solution for posting articles. I like having someone doing some work, and I completely understand the dupes we see (I've submitted a few in my life, thankfully none were accepted).

    There's still someone doing some work on Digg. The difference is that it's everybody doing the work, not one person.

    Slashdot and Digg are different, why do everybody want one to be better than the other ?

    Hmm, I think you're wrong, I read somewhere that the new user interface will not look like Outlook but will be more like a command line. From what they said, "Our operations group never wants to rely on any sort of user interface".

    The thing we need is AT LEAST the source code from their last release (and they have to do it, because it's required by the GPL). If we can get a CVS or SVN with their current source code, it's even better, for us, and for them, because then we can work on improving the thing.

    If you'd read the article, you'd seen it's supposed to work again now.

    The protests gathered pace, and when 600 MySpace customers complained and a campaign began to boycott the site and relocate to rival sites such as Friendster, Linkedin, revver.com and Facebook.com, News Corp relented and restored the links.

    I'm going to buy a PowerBook 12' soon. I don't know yet if I'll run Yellow Dog, or Ubuntu, or Debian.

    Anyone tried them ? How does Yellow Dog and Ubuntu support the hardware ?

    Also, can anyone who tried running Linux on a new PowerBook can tell me if all the hardware is correctly supported ?

    Actually blackdown seems to have the JDK 1.3 for Linux/PPC :

    However, no 1.4 or 1.5.

    But the 1.5 from IBM seems to be avaible on Linux/PPC ...

    It can, if it's not encrypted. If it's encrypted then it depends of the program used to decrypt the file.

    Yes, it's similar.

    It's nothing really special, until it's implemented so laptop users can easily set up an encrypted root filesystem and be able to boot into it easily.

    It's aldready possible.

    PGP lets you do this on various platforms.

    PGP lets you encrypt a file, not a filesystem.

    FreeNX is nice, however it seems to be missing a feature we have in VNC. With vnc you can run the viewer with the '-listen' option, then wait for the server to initiate the connection. With regular X remote display, you can do a 'xhost +hostname' (or something similar using xauth) and then receive a window from this host. I didn't find how to do that using FreeNX, the client has to initiate the connection. If anyone has any idea about how to do that, I'm interested ...

    Many thanks to eucd.info and all the people who helped this. Without them, we would have DRM everywhere, p2p illegal (even for sharing free software or other free content), and free software would be illegal as well (as any software which does not respect DRM). Ok, maybe this is what will happen finally (that would be sad), but there is still hope ... Thoses people wanted a law that make DRM mandatory, hopefully we'll get a law that allow us to share music legally.

    We'll see in January what happens ...

    Then I guess I can wait until that brand spanking new video card is obsolete before I can use it in X, because it'll take that long to reverse engineer it and write drivers that can do half the stuff the vendor supplied drivers can.

    Let's be real. We all can't take that stand of principal and lock ourself out of a lot of options. Kudos to those who can but "use them at your own risk" is not a good enough answer for most people.


    Then the answer is : stop buying shit ! If the vendor doesn't want to give the specs for the things YOU BUY, then don't buy it.
