What if the life that would have formed without our intervention had turned out to be better than ours in any number of ways? Believe it or not, humans are not necessarily the benchmark of life overall.

It's this type of thinking that has driven the "westernize everybody" philosophy throughout the last several hundred years. Before Europeans arrived in North America, the Indians had created complex political and social structures that worked as well or better than what was forced upon them by colonists. By "taming the savages" without stopping to actually look at how they interacted with each other and, more importantly, nature, colonists damned the Indians along with themselves to the wasteful, filthy existence that has reduced this beautiful planet to a dirty brown globe.

We, as stupid humans, destroy anything we touch, especially since the idiocy of economic politics has come to outweigh any other pursuit.

I can only hope that whatever might be developing upon Titan does so in time to fight us off.

Actually, I just intended to make fun of the fact that Slashdot relies almost entirely upon a belief that irrational hatred wins users.

But, since you asked, I don't think that the comment from 'squiggeslash' contains irrational hatred (assuming that's the original post you mean). In fact, I think it's dead-on, in that most linux pundits don't want choice, they want to construct their own replacement monopoly, which will suddenly become A Good Thing. I know that most of them figure that linux et al can't be a monopoly because of its alleged freeness, but the dissection of that is so lengthy that I'll just say, "Incorrect."

FOSS, as far as I am concerned, is the feminism of the IT world (ironic, no?). Most hardcore feminists claim that it's merely a desire to end centuries of patriarchal oppression and attain equality, yet are not satisfied until it patriarchal thinking is replaced by the same thing in reverse. Women, in their estimation, should be placed above men in importance in the name of their pursuit (Read Vandana Shiva's "The Impoverishment of the Environment: Women and Children Last" for an example). This is equality? How?

I see the same thing in the Slashdot world. Microsoft is bad, bad, bad, and anyone who chooses their products is degraded and called stupid. These people constantly talk about 'tricking' unsuspecting luddites into using non-Microsoft products, certain that they won't notice the difference while still offering another tick on the bedpost of the FOSS revolution! Whether they notice isn't really the point, though, is it? By sneaking something else in there, they've removed the luddite's choice. Let me guess, "They're not educated enough in the matter to make a proper choice." Doesn't matter.

Despite the nasal whine around this place, FOSS isn't the best choice for everyone in all cases, or even in many cases. Yet, anything from a proprietary source is immediately bad, despite the fact that it may do the job better than a free alternative. Having read Slashdot for what is approaching six years, I have a hard time believing that a wish to offer choice is behind any of this.

I think it's hilarious that so many alleged "linux geeks" buy American cars. American cars lack quality, security, performance and are only sold because millions are too stupid to seek out better options. By waving the 'Murcan flag behind a Chevy truck commercial, it appeals to your sense of loyalty and causes you to forget what you're actually buying (read: junk).

The only way that American car quality will EVER improve is if the customers vote with their money. Since many (most?) North Americans can't IMAGINE buying any 'jap crap,' the future of U.S. manufacturers remains clogged with 40,000 mile engine rebuilds while the rest of us, willing to pay more now for imported vehicles (TCO, don't you know), drive happily past.

Sound familiar? Replace the flag with slick marketing, and it's the argument many of you employ in 'discussions' of why Microsoft continues to flourish. Yet, when it comes to cars, you're unsurprisingly not willing to put your money where your mouth is.

There's just nothing better than 'conversing' with American car fans. "What are you calling junk? My Chev has 250,000 miles on it!" "Really? How many engines and transmissions has it been through?" "Four." Heh. I worked in auto parts for three summers -- it happens all the time.
