  1. I can see the headlines now... on Simcity Microwave Power by 2050? · · Score: 1

  2. Embedded real-time development would suffer on Microsoft to Buy Rational and/or Borland? · · Score: 1

A few years ago Rational purchased a company called ObjecTime because they had a very solid product ironically called ObjecTime. This tool allowed you to model your system, build state machines, build and run test harnesses, build message sequence charts, and run and test on an embedded target system all with relative ease I've never before experienced in a tool (and I've used plenty of them). The modeling methodology behind the tool was called ROOM (forgot what the acronym meant). ROOM became UML+realtime extensions as the industry quickly realized how good of a job Bran Selic had done in coming up with ROOM.

The long and short of it is....MS wants all realtime developers to use WinCE and only WinCE. The rational product targets at least a dozen different RTOSs and runs on both Windows and various Unix platforms. I doubt MS would continue to support all of this if they do in fact buy the company.

What a shame if it happens.....

  3. They don't mention who benefits from this research on Folding@Home Client's Performance Impact Measured · · Score: 1

The website listed doesn't mention who is benefitting from all this research and computing power.

Of course, the ultimate benefit will be society when someone comes up with some useful counter to the diseases caused by mis-folded proteins.

I'm more concerned with whether someone out there is going to patent the technology after using all of the research we helped them gather then setup some kind of new bio-tech company and make millions.

I'm not about to help people who are just going to own information that are planning to make millions and all because I let them use MY computing resources.

I'm sick of these groups of people who push these distributed computing projects off like they don't cost the users anything. It's kind of like the concept of spare change. Just because I have some doesn't mean you can have it and it doesn't mean it doesn't cost me anything.

  4. What a STUPID thing to ask!!! on F-22 Avionics Require Inflight Reboot · · Score: 1
Any Slashdotters working on this project? If so, why do you need the inflight reboot?

And they should respond to you and 10 minutes later be carted away from their office in handcuffs for violating all sorts of laws and agreements?! Work on this type of military hardware is absolutely classified which means you Joe Slashdot have no business knowing it.

What kind of moron can't take an eduated guess as to what some 19 year old away from home able to stay up all night without anyone yelling at him will do. He'll buy a few 100 gig drives and load up on pron to last him the whole semester. He'll stay up all night and play his newly pirated version of UT2003. He'll have a permament ftp connection downloading hordes of mp3s and more than likely run his own ftp server filled with mp3s.

How it will be used. Get real use your brain and think what it was like being 19 and away from home and without a girlfriend cuz your a geek.

  6. Take a Project Management certification course on Project Management For Programmers? · · Score: 2, Insightful
I recently found such a course offered by Villanova university. I talked with a Villanova rep and he indicated the response from companies hiring people going through the course is very positive. The course is completely online and you have like 8 weeks to do it all.

Taking a course like this would put you ahead of those that have neither the project management background or skills and those with a tech background who want to move into project management but don't have a background in it.

  7. rednecks won't buy these until... on Walmart Ships PCs with Lindows OS · · Score: 2, Informative
they carve out a section of the actual stores and attempt to sell them. Remember this is just their online store. The online store sells MANY MANY more items than the real stores sell.

This will be big news when the redneck can actually walk into a Walmart and see the Lindows computer on the shelf and put it in their cart.
