You have some strong points, but I do somewhat disagree with some of them. To paraphrase your claim, you are rebutting the previous argument that the companies hit by MS SQL worm "should have known".
While your rebuttal has a very good point, however the company "should have known" in one way or another, especially if they are buying equipment that is used for their business. What kind of company makes such a critical purchase without doing the correct research?
According to your argument, if I were a large corporation selling widgets, and I need a slew of networked computers to help improve the business, then I don't need to do research for that product, I just go out, buy a bunch of computers, buy some CAT5 cables, a switch and voila. Clearly, at least a little bit of research should be done, and clearly I should at least RTFM. And I believe with all the press (print and electronic media) companies know, or at least have an inkling, that Microsoft products have serious vulnerabilities. This would lead me to either hire an admin, or at least make sure it is secure myself.
Therefore, if the research is NOT done, then yes, they do deserve to be hit.
That's like me buying a bank without a security system. Then someone comes and robs me, and I claim, "how should I have known?" I bet if I did the minimum amount of research I would have known that there are such things as bank robbers and burglars.
I am pretty sure that YOU would do the proper research if you were buying certain products, a car, a computer, etc, for your personal use. Why shouldn't companies do the research as well? Albeit, I completely agree that there is NO excuse for MS' lack of security practice.
The other problem that keeps me from agreeing with your argument is that you make the implication that MS SQL is as simple to use as...a copier, a truck, machine tool. Once again, a little common sense and a minimum amount of research would tell you that there is more to it than that. However, IF Microsoft had a secure product, then I would be more apt to agree with your claim. But, MS has not developed SQL and other products to the point where it is as simple to use as a copier. Until then, they should have known.
Abstract: The following is indirectly related to the article and is a reponse to the actions of fanatics, namely the Islamic extremists we have been hearing about in the media...
Look at yourselves. You extremists are fucking idiots. Why? What good does blowing yourself up really do for you? You are an idiot because you are brainwashed by a BOOK! A book written by a HUMAN! You dedicate your life to this BOOK...a material thing. You believe in a deity/demi god/figure-head...whatever...you can call him/her/it Mohammed, Jesus Christ or whatever you want...but in any case you are a FOLLOWER. You do not have the mentality to think on your own. It is just sad.
So you think that blowing yourselves up in the name of Allah will guarantee you paradise in the afterworld. Well you jackass, prove to me your paradise. Show me that you have real proof of it...show me it's not based on faith. If you can't, then you only believe in things that someone else told you. Well, listen to this then...BLOWING YOURSELF UP DOES NOT GUARANTEE PARADISE. There, now you can follow MY words and teachings. Every evening you can face my house and worship me because I said those profound things. What makes the teachings of Koran better than my teachings? Nothing. Religion is a farce. Especially a religion that calls upon "jihads" or wars based on religion! How fucking stupid is that idea? A religion that resorts to war?...bah. Sounds like someone wrote that book so that they could control idiots like you. And how stupid are you for following this idea?
What you disagree with me now? Are you gonna blow yourself up to kill me because I have a dissenting opinion? I inivite you to come...I'll stick that bomb up your ass and see how much paradise you get after you're dead. Keep blowing yourselves up, the world is better off without idiots like you. Except blow yourselves up in your own home. Take your whole family with you.
Wake up, live for YOURSELF! Don't live by a BOOK, live by your own intuitions, use your BRAIN! You may live longer.
Oh, Christianity is no better either. Look at those blowing up abortion clinics! I thought those pro-life people were...well...pro-life! Isn't it ironic that these extremist pro-lifers kill people to support their cause? You people are friggin rednecks. So are you Islamic extremists. What do you hope to accomplish? Is the rest of the world going to cave into your demands because you blow yourself up? Do you know what the rest of the world thinks when you blow yourselves up in the middle of town? Here is what they think..."What an idiot."
If there ever was a time that I feel justified in genocide, then this is it. I propose that "terrorists" or "freedom fighters" that decide to use violence as a means to an end, should be killed. That will get you into paradise pretty quickly I would say. Funny thing is, I am against capital punishment...except in this case.
Too many atrocities have been commited in the name of religion, isn't it time that you religious idiots quit being part of the problem. Yes, that includes you Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Islamics, etc. Quit living in your hypocrisy. Reject your religious upbringing. See the REAL light...the light of truth and logic. Not some book based fable. Quit living the life of a Christian, Jew, whatever...give all that up, and live the life of a human.
This happened to me about 3 semesters ago. We were given 6 weeks to code up an assignment (A rather huge assignment). I finished VERY early. My "friend" Jay didn't start on it until VERY late. I also came to find out he is NOT a strong coder at all.
A few nights before the due date, he claimed that he was stuck on some areas and wanted me to help him out.
Since he has been in the same classes with me for the last 3 semesters, AND since he has never been known to have "plagiarised", AND since I was busy studying for other classes, I just sent him a tarball of my source - my whole source (big mistake).
I thought nothing of it since I assumed that we were "classroom" buds and he would never plagiarise my work. A few weeks later the teacher caught me right before class and told me Jay had copied my program. She also told me that Jay AND I were subject to University policy which required her to automatically fail BOTH of us, even though I did the work.
Luckily, it was a small class, and since she had seen previous work from Jay and I, she deduced that it was Jay that had cheated and not me. Her solution, confront Jay, and if he fessed up that he copied my work, then I would get an A, and he had a chance to resubmit the program (with a lot of penalties). As undergrads, I felt that was the best decision the teacher could make. She kept the problem confined in the classroom and solved it within the classroom instead of yelling "FIRE" and getting EVERYONE involved.
The result, I got an A, and Jay had to recode his program (I think he got a D). But two things came out of the situation, Jay learned his lesson about cheating, we are still friends, and nobody got dropped from school. The problem got solved, Jay learned his lesson, I learned my lesson (not to give out my full source to classmates), and nobody got canned from school.
This reiterates the point that problems should be kept confined and solved within the classroom, if it absolutely cannot be handled within the classroom, then bring in the cavalry.
Oh yeah, Jay is no longer a CS major, he is now a business major.
On a sidenote: I asked to see Jay's code right after I was informed of this "problem", so that I could refute the teacher's statements, I figured I should defend Jay's work (since arguning for Jay, and refuting my teacher helps ME out the most). But, when I got to her office and saw his code, I was aghast at how it was actually an exact copy of MY code, HE DIDN'T EVEN CHANGE THE VARIABLES! All Jay did was put some tabs in and make it look different. All I could say was "wow, I can't believe this." From that day, I never held Jay in such a high regard.
>Cutting down on cheating cuts down on these other issues (or at least, I believe, that is what Georgia Tech is trying to accomplish)
You've GOT to be kidding me right? What cocoon have you been wrapped in for the last 20 years? Your righteous attitude is disgusting unless you provide some better evidence on why that is true and why Georgia Tech's policy is not flawed. Until then, STFU.
Hmm, I have read John Locke. Which part of Locke's philosophy are you referring to? I concede, maybe putting them completely out of business may be too harsh, and you are right, a government can't (shouldn't) simply SHUT DOWN a company, there are better ways for a government to shut down a business in a more covert method. The government (and people) can create an economic environment for any targetted company where that company cannot survive. In other words, there are other ways to shut MS down.
The Microsoft Corp. has been deemed guilty of violating various Antitrust Laws. The question now is, how to punish them?
I say, cripple the company severely enough to allow many smaller software development companies to grow. Crippling to that extent is in essence putting them out of business. That is bad for Microsoft. But good for everyone.
Why?
Microsoft is helping to cripple our economy. How many jobs were lost when Microsoft bought ought companies and closed them? A google search would report many web pagse detailing these companies and what happened after Microsoft bought them. A lot of people lost jobs. The worst, the potential for MORE jobs in the future are stifled by Microsoft. Who wants to compete with MS Windows right now? Noone! Because MS' business practices would swallow them up. A loss of potential jobs; a crutch to our economy. Statistics and common sense alone would show, that many smaller development companies would employ more people as opposed to one large company.
More jobs can never really HURT an economy. More jobs means more productivity. The higher our Gross Domestic Product (Production Value), the better for everyone in that economy.
Time to give Microsoft axe.

LOL, this so called "scientific" data has been presented in such a way that a Windows marketer would love.
First note that Linux has an AGGREGATE column while Windows does not. A better use of the graphs would be to remove the aggregate column. I mean really, does a Linux distribution exists that incorporates ALL other distributions? I don't think so. If the Linux aggregate column cannot be removed, then a more fair representation would be to also aggregate the Windows vulnerabilities, then check to see how the numbers compare.
I also wonder how the numbers have changed with the introduction of XP.
A side note:
Besides...what good is an OS that had less vulnerabilities crop up last year when that system is unstable! (IE Windoze)
It takes a real geek to plan on having his children all have ages that are prime numbers at the same time.
and it takes another real geek to notice.
So does that mean I have to do software upgrades and security patches every week now?
So tell me, how does the allegation that Mr. Runner stole coffee and creamer have ANYTHING to do with stealing bandwidth?
I think it means that the "missing" states are the states that don't have spam laws yet?
Then use Opera.
