The author of the report is a long time programmer (from what I know, he was programming WAY before any of you and holds a degree from Carnegie Mellon) and probably knows more about any OS than most of you guys. So, yes, if he is the one on that panel, he will be speaking the same language.
Read the report before making judgements.

WSJ Says Linux Lags
·
· Score: 1
Why don't you read the actual report before forming any judgements. I know for a fact that the authors of the study have been working VERY hard on this report. There is a *very* long track record of OS comparisons by Tony Iams that most of you will ignore, but are, and have been, taken VERY seriously by most of the top executives and developers at MS, Sun, IBM, and Compaq. Trust me. There is NO bias. Yes, this particular article appeared on MSNBC, but it is a link to the WSJ story. Claiming any sort of FUD or bias when most of you haven't even bothered to read the summary or full report (btw, NT did NOT place "first" in this study, so get off that point), is pure ignorance on your part.
Oh, man.... My stomach hurts from that one! The best part? "Linux doesn't have the rich set of drivers..." LOL!!! RICH??? Try "BITCH!" I guess he has to say things like this, but it's completely ignant! I guess I don't need to point out the obvious, but his argument is pathetic at best. No GUI? Huh?? This is like turning your back to a freight train as it's about to run you over.... Thanks for the laughs, Bill!!!
I talked to one of the DJs at WXRK in NY (Home of Howard Stern) a few months ago because I was pissed off that they were not playing anything from the new Judas Priest albums. What it comes down to is the fact that the major labels MAKE SURE the singles they want played get played, and the songs they want to be hits become hits. Plain and simple. Big bucks talk. It's f**king lame, and I hope one day they all collapse. Local bands or bands on independent labels have NO chance on radio or eMpTyV, hence they rarely make any money. Unfortunately, this model does away with most of the talent. All we get is bullsh*t, flavor of the day kind of garbage that the suits have determined we will hear. Down with the industry!!!!
I love watching the industry squirm. You know how much bands make per $16 CD? Roughly $1 per CD. And that's high. Guess who's getting the other $15.... Hopefully, this will result in bands making a lot more money instead of being whores to the record suits. GO MP3!!!!! There is no WAY to stop this..... F THE RECORD INDUSTRY!!!
I think this is the first SOLID piece of evidence I've seen showing how much trouble M$ is in in the OS market. There's no M$ bashing. Just concrete facts, as far as I can see. The author deserves applause for writing such a brilliant piece. I would think, more so now than ever, the folks in Redmond are chasing their tails more and more, not knowing how to stem the tide of Linux. The simple fact is that Linux is going to roll right over them. The momentum is too strong to fight. Cheers to all you folks developing Linux apps!!
I just price dout a Dell PowerEdge 2300 with dual 450 Mhz Pentium III, 256 MB RAM, and dual 9.1 GB Ultra2 drives, dual NIC, 17" monitor, and WinNT 4.0. (Smae config as the G3, minus the extra CPU) Price? $6,127.
So, no, a dual PIII is not even close to being less...
Geez...one article without any specifics, and half of you guys go nuts. Lay off already!! Apple hasn't said ANYTHING yet, and you are bastardizing them for hijacking FreeBSD/Mach!
Actually, no, it's not. Steve Ballmer seems to be the only one with a small grip on reality. He is apparently garbbing the bull by the balls. There was an earlier article that described how he has been on a rampage inside M$ because of the shitty software and lame customer service they are known for, as well as a lot of internal complacency. he actually sees M$ as a threatened entity. Who knows if this will make any difference, as the DOJ is about 50 points ahead with 10 seconds to go....Can't wait to see that gavel come crashing down.....
Sooner or later, the IT industry will realize that this firm produces more fluff than anything else. Take a look at their stock and earnings the past two years? You get the picture. They are a bloated and arrogant organization and rarely publish anything of deep substance. They are still regarded as tops in the industry, but (hopefully) that will change. As in most IT consulting firms (I work for one, whose boss has Gartner envy ever since they fired him 15 years ago...), there's more mental masturbation going on than anything. Funny thing is, people pay a lot for it....
Not flaming or praising this dude (although he has a tendency to make me shake my head in disbelief....), but does anyone know this clown's background? Or is he just "lucky" enough to have landed a spot as a journalist in an IT trade mag?
It would be sweet if these Linux guys ran something like SPECweb96 on one of these babies and blew away most of the big boys' Unixes... (i.e. IBM and HP) Let's see some smoking web servers, eh?
I often side with the ACLU on many matters, but I have to disagree with them here. There should be two people put to death: telemarketers and spammers. Period. Thank you.
It's nice to see the DOJ lawyers bitch-slapping every single M$ employee taking the stand. If I were this guy Rosen, I would tell M$ to fuck off, hand in my resignation and turn against them. A "low level employee???" OUCH! How's that for back stabbing?
I am not saying that the added $14K is a burden for a large company. The point is that you are paying 35% MORE for a measly 14% performance gain, which is barely noticeable in any computer. You still pay the same premium for a 1-way box, btw. You bring up a good argument surrounding low price/performance for the low end. However, even for 1-way boxes using these new chips, the gains are minimal. If you need a decent 1-2 way server, screw the high-end chips. Buy something cheaper and PRACTICAL. And that's what I am getting at. There is no need to buy into this endless cycle of upgrades. Sure, the Xeon was a big improvement over PPro, but the incremental upgrades, in most cases, are a waste of money, for high AND low-end boxes.
I just did a small writeup at work exposing the bullshit Intel is selling its customers. They recently started shipping 450 MHz Xeon chips with the 2 MB cache. In comparing 4-way servers from IBM and HP, I found that the price increase from a 4-way 400/1MB server to a 4-way 450 MHz/2 MB was roughly $14,000 - a 35% price increase. The improvement in performance? Well, that was only 14%. Take that number with a grain of salt because these systems (used in TPC-C) are super-tweaked/tuned for bragging rights in the server market. I bet you the P3 will show similar, marginal gains over the P2. Yet, Intel will charge a huge premium. Meanwhile, you can grab a Celeron box for half the price (not a 4-way, but you understand the point). Notice how the P3, from what I know, will only be available for 2-way systems intially.... My question is, how much horsepower do you need for a departmental file-print server?? Run Linux on an old Pentium, and you should be fine, right? Anyway, my point is that Intel scams its customers by creating a lot of confusion in the marketplace (Celery, PII, Xeon, etc.....) and trying to impress the stupid public with new clock speeds, even though the gains in performance are marginal at best......
This is great news, and shows that this country still has some common sense lurking about. I am so sick and tired of the abortion rights psychos acting like they are the holy ghosts who have given themselves the right to decide how others live their lives. As someone pointed out, if you don't believe in abortion, don't have one. I don't want to get very political, because it's almost pointless, but if these assholes want to rid the world of abortion, I'd like them to show the world who THEY are going to take care of all the unwanted children being born, esp. to 16 year-old kids.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Clearly this site was/is a threat to many people. It was a call to kill and nothing less. Fuck them. The decision (fines) should've been higher. I hope these fuckers rot in hell for their terroristic ways....and their young children all get stuck with illigitimate babies....hehehe....
While/. deserves a bit of credit in the fact that Mr. Godun received support, it was the ongoing coverage on http://www.macintouch.com that had the real effect of influencing BA's policy "reversal." Any and all of BA's drones who was involved in this complete fiasco followed the saga on MacInTouch, not here. Don't get too carried away patting yourselves on the back.
Jesus. F. Christ! 350 strokes per minute for that thing?? Even with a tube of lube, you are looking at a seriously sore willy! I'll stick with my girlfriend, thanks... As I've said before, there are too many people with too much time on their hands (no pun intended). Time for a plague or something....
I was commenting on the first post thing. Just being juvenile. Please forgive me. I figure it's a one in a lifetime opportunity. = ) Actually, I think the Sony suit is a bunch of bullshit. Why do they need to do this? It's senseless. Like people are going to stop buying PlayStations because of this? I don't think so..... I'm not a lawyer, but the grounds of the suit seem baseless. However, fighting this could kill Connectix.
