4-way is NT's sweet spot. Linux has not yet been tuned to take full advantage of 4 CPUs. On single and dual, Linux will spank an NT box. But higher end configs have yet to be optimized for Linux. Even Linus admits that. (He said so at the AIIM conference last week).
Give me a break. They didn't go "out of their way" to make the Linux box look bad. They simply should've made sure to have a well-set up server. Another fact is that NT DOES beat up on Linux in 4-way systems. It's just another thing Linux needs to catch up on. But give the conspiracy theories a rest already.... And get back to class....

For one, it takes a LOT of money for a small company to "got out and test SMP systems themselves." Second, you guys would bitch if you didn't like the results, basically because it appears any criticism of Linux is heresy. Benchmarks like TPC-C and SPECweb96 are established industry benchmarks. They are developed by a consortium of vendors over a period of YEARS. This takes a lot of money and a lot of work. You want benchmarks? Then why don't you whining babies download some benchmarks toolkits (I believe you can get your hands on the code for SPECweb96, etc.) and have someone maintain a credible depository for these results. Once you guys can demonstrate real world performance, it will be easier to match up against the bigger guns. Then you can brag a little more. I am sure Tony Iams' panel discussion with Linus is going to be great. Tony is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to operating systems (believe me, he tests them all extensively over and over again right in his office). I think they still have an AS/400 vs. NT report where he SLAMMED NT's capabilities. Funny thing is, M$ takes his analysis VERY seriously. I know this report was NOT an intentional ding on Linux. I know some of you have a hard time with real criticism, but that's the truth. I'd take it as more of a challenge to improve upon what Linux is now, and use it as a roadmap.
I'll agree with you on that. Your school DOES suck! Most wired schools provide connections to a campus LAN and/or provide a phone line in the room. Where the hell do you go to school?
Well, apparently, you didn't read what I said. Who invented FireWire? Look how many companies are clamoring to incorporate it into their products. That inlcudes Compaq, Sony, Panasonic, IBM, etc. What's kinda funny is that Dell didn't buy into it early enough and will end up paying more or get left behind. Next, what about Quicktime? Are you saying QT 3.x and 4.0 are "small things?" Try again. It's going to kick the crap out of Real and Windows Media Player. Again, the surge of USB products (while not an Apple invented technology) lies SOLELY with the iMac and Apple. They pushed hard for it and vendors who make USB peripherals are seeing a nice increase in sales. Don't tell me there is no USB market. I won't argue with you about service. Apple needs to get its tushy in gear as far as that's concerned.
I love this argument. I've heard it about 50 times. Yet, since the iMac came out, I have yet to hear of ONE report where the CD-ROm tray actually broke. Give it a rest already.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... they pioneered the direct PC marketing movement. WHat else have they done? Not a lot. After Michael Dell's shares start to sputter during the next few years, let's see how "brilliant" Dell is. Their hardware is generic. Their industrial design sucks. They are an OEM reseller as far as I am concerned and nothing Michael Dell says means anything to me anymore. The day Dell comes up with something REMOTELY ingenius, like Apple seems to do on a regular basis, I might pay more attention to them....
Since when has Apple been accused of "stealing" ideas in the PC industry? Who brought the GUI to the rest of us (don't start with the PARC thing...)? What about the true portable (PowerBook)? SCSI on the desktop? Firewire? USB (let's see when USB actually took off. PCs have had it for 2 years, yet no one gave a sh*t about it until the iMac came along and Apple pushed hard for it). Sure, they've had their fair share of "proprietary technologies," but so what? So has IBM. Now, they INCORPORATE PCI, EIDE disks, etc. I think your premise that "ideas from other markets are worthless" is stupid.
First of all, Linux places NO threat to Intel. Does Intel REALLY care what kind of OS runs on their chips? No. This is just another "initiative" announcement that means nothing. We will never see a "thin" server from this pair. Besides, the cost of ownership doesn't justify it. Maybe if it was about $500, then..... But that'll never happen either.
(Before I go on... Yes, I actually do make a living in the IT industry selling my "expertise" to industry vendors. I keep my identity private for a reason).
Actually, I *DID* read the report, hot shot. And I feel given their methodology, the report was fair and valid. No, they didn't do in-house testing. Why should they? What is to be gained by that? (They also probably cannot afford to buy an AlphaServer, Sun Enterprise server, SGI Origin box, and an RS/6000, but that's another issue...) PC Week and Info World labs do it for everyone to read. I don't believe you will find any kind of "score card summary" from anyone else. And considering the work Mr. Iams has done in the past (which I doubt you have any knowledge of) I consider this to be an excellent feature-for-feature comparison. You can argue till your blue in the face about whether or not you agree. But I simply believe that this is a credible study and report. What it appears to me is that, like many others on here, you can't accept the fact that Linux isn't the be-all-end-all fo OSes. I certainly do not discount it's power. But let's face the facts that it still does NOT compare to AIX and many other Unices that have been developed over the past 30-whatever years. I certainly expect it to be an "enterprise-class" OS in the forseable future, but you sure as hell don't see anyone running a Linux box to handle, say, an HMO's data center. Do you? I'd call that "enterprise class." Now, you criticize DHBA for using industry standard (read: industry *recognized* benchmarks that have been developed over a long period of time...) benchmarks to gauge performance. Well, what do you expect them to do? Spend money and resources they most likely do not have to come up with their won performance benchmarks? I'd like to see _you_ do that. Even if they did, you'd jump on them because they were using something that no one else in the industry recognizes as a standard! (FYI, it usually takes about 3 years of intense debate and testing by a consortium of vendors and programmers to certify a benchmark such a SPECweb96). Also, I don't see why you think this firm is putting down Linux and trying to defend some sort of status quo. The study simply points out what the OS currently lacks and where development efforts need to be focused. They point out the plusses AND minuses of EACH OS. As someone else stated, this study can serve as a form of roadmap for Linux.
