  1. Re:Hmm... Too bad Quicktime isn't open source. on Darwin Streaming Server Beats Real, Windows Media · · Score: 2, Insightful

Quicktime is probably the best open source video streaming server out there today, maybe the only one. It shouldn't be too difficult to use it as a starting point and hack it (if that is what is required) to stream other formats.

Another option is to leave it as it is and make sure your encoder and player are compatible with it.

Take a look at the mpeg4ip project on sourceforge. Shame about the MPEG4 license though :(

  2. Re:Why? on Mandrake Asks for Support · · Score: 1

Well I'm not buying Mandrake! Why? Two reasons...
    1) I have an ADSL modem and a CD burner,
    2) I am always out when any parcel is delivered so mail-ordering stuff is a real hassle.

For these reasons I would rather download *and* join the Mandrake club (and I bet you thought I was a leech!). I really appreciate Mandrake and use it at home and am happy to support them.

If it wasn't Microsoft then auto-update would probably be useful. I would be quite happy for my Linux distro to update itself, for example, because I know the disto would issue patches in good faith.

    Not so with Microsoft.
Their patches are more-or-less gauranteed to...
    1) Break compatibility with non MS operating systems,
    2) Enforce content protection,
    3) Extend their Monopoly by the above and other means.

Also, one big issue here is that auto-updates should be something the user has the right to choose, not something that is legally enforced by the vendor.

  4. Linux books... on What Kind of Books do You Want? · · Score: 1

I have bought a few Linux books and found one problem with them. They are only useful for one or two distributions. They describe the setup tools of that distro but not the config files these tools are operating on.

I have a general Unix book that I find 100% more useful, but probably there are differences in the way network support, boot process etc is done.

What I would like is book that explains first and foremost the "GNU/Linux" system, where the config files are, what they do, what to put in them. I say GNU/Linux here because the books I've seen already do a good job describing kernel compilation, it's the rest of the Unixness of the system that remains hidden.

Never mind how hi-fi it is, I need something to use at 8kbps for mono speech. I am streaming audio to 3rd world countries.

Anyone know any MELP, CELP codecs?
