    Unless the curriculum has changed a *lot*, it's all about reading "Of Mice and Men" (a book that I read in a couple hours, several times over) and then spending 6 fucking months dissecting it to find ridiculous hidden meanings and literary bollocks.

    Wow. That's exactly my experience with the same book. I guess we both went to a UK school when they were trying to knock out carbon copy thatcherites.

    I remember being the only one in a math class who was willing to point out that if you had to round to a whole number 4.46 is closer to 4 than 5. Apparently the rule was to round off one digit at a time and always round 5 upwards. Not one of 29 or so other children was willing to agree with me because the teacher must be right even when he is clearly wrong.

    I had a chemistry teacher who could barely speak English. We had to sit and pretend to listen even though we didn't understand a word. When I complained to my year head he just took the piss out of me. Clearly it was my fault this teacher could not speak English.

    The UK education system.. The higher level were good but the lower mandatory levels were one crock of shit.

    I do still use NEdit though. Fantastic regex support.

    I use NEdit pretty much every working day - it was even my main programming editor of choice for many years.

    This looks like a calculated corporate "FUCK YOU" from the big corporations to the Open Source community.

    It's nothing of the sort, it's a gift not a liability. Giving this gift does not imply an obligation on the part of the receiver.

    If the open source world doesn't want to use it they don't have to. As it's pretty old now I don't see any of the Linux distros being remotely interested.

    Having said that it would be really funny if everyone with a redhat support contract would request this.

    CDE is not making a comeback. It was open sourced because it has no commercial value.

    Install XFCE if you want something lightweight, nothing to see here.

    CDE was the desktop enviro on the Sun workstations I used in college. I may have to download it and use it just for nostalgia's sake... and, that sort of thing is probably the only useful thing about this release.

    What was it? Solaris 9 when they started giving people the choice of CDE or GNOME. GNOME was a lot better and everyone dumped CDE.

    CDE was a limited and annoying window manager, but it was better than no window manager which is the only reason people used it.

    That's just wonderful. Now all we need is a time machine to take the now open source back to 10 years ago.

    CDE may have been great a few years ago but in 2012 this code is obsolete. It's light years behind KDE, GNOME, and most of the lightweight windows managers.

    I would recommend systems administration instead of programming if a bad memory is a problem and repetitive tasks stick well. Programming is anything but repetitive.

    System administration is anything but repetitive too, or at least it is once you have configuration management, backups, and monitoring in place.

    People ho can easilly beat olympics can also, perhaps, be greatests, fastests, more agile and pain resistant soldiers?

    You are just restating my point with far less clarity.

    If China could do such a thing they would not waste it on winning swimming medals if so doing meant tipping off their likely future enemies. Swimming medals are just not that important. Isn't it far more likely that this girl is an exceptionally good swimmer, has trained for years, and the US can't handle losing without making up oddball stories.

    I am talking about that 16 year old Chinese girl, Ye Shiwen, who broke a world record in swimming competition, resulting in a respected American swimming coach John Leonard, who also happen to be the US executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, said that Chinese girl must have been using "genetic manipulation" to enhance athletic performance

    What is "Genetic manipulation"? Is this guy seriously suggesting the Chinese geneticly engineered Ye Shiwen just to win swimming medals?

    It has nothing to do with "peak" age of anything. It's all about having tons of time free, and very few interests that are focused such that you'll spend 12 hours a day doing something that you'd not have the time or patience to do nowadays.

    12 Hours a day doing something interesting. Wow, those were good days. Now I'm exceptionally lucky if I get 12 minutes to spend on the same task without interuption.

    And to prove my point the phone rang while I was writting the above sentence.

    I don't know what areas you are talking about but I have traveled around India and find it hard to believe anywhere in the US is quite like that.

    Although Indians deny it India has rivers of sewage which in hot weather smell in a way that can't be described in words. It has people, and I mean the majority, taking dumps in the street because they don't have toilets, and I mean in cities not small towns. It has mice and rats like you would not believe. It has groups, and I mean groups of hundreds, of beggars who will follow anyone foreign around and beg all day. It has a massive population who sleep on the streets or in train stations. The trash mountains are literally mountains with people picking though them looking for anything of value.

    Show me pictures of the US that look anywhere near that bad and I'll be astonished.

    You're basically saying that these guys have so little control over their hormones that they can't functional a ration beings in the presence of an attractive woman.

    Yes, that's about it. The reason for that could be that due to the low numbers of women in IT, or it could be something to do with the fear of being fired for sexual harrasment for a single offhand remark.

    I believe the laws meant to protect women in the workplace have just made them a lot more trouble to employ in the US at least. Everyone loses.

    It's important to note that on private premises, the staff can ask you to leave for any reason (it's their shop, not yours) and if you refuse, they can legally use reasonable force.

    No, although they may be allowed to use minimum force. Just because these people work for a junk food chain doesn't mean they can rip things off people's heads or deliberately damage their paperwork.

    There are some thugs who think because they are employed they can assult their boss's customers. These kinds of people don't stay employed long.

    You have that wrong. A racist is anyone who states or in any way implies that all races are not identical.     Racism has a very low burden of proof because essentially everyone is guilty, it is also a very serious crime. That makes it a convenient tool to attack people with even when race has nothing to do with the situation.

    This story is about thugs who work for McDonalds assulting customers. Race really isn't involved anywhere.

    What the hell. Anyone one would travel the world, choose to give their children an opportunity to learn Parisian french and would then choose to go to a Mc Donalds, in Paris, in France, the home of gastromomy deserves to get smacked upside the head. geez.

    Quite true, Paris has wonderful places to eat. However the problem was that he was smacked upside the head for the wrong reason and by the wrong people.

    Also McDonalds should not employ thugs, or allow any of its franchise's to do so. That is seriously bad for the company image.
