It's legal because Microsoft have a huge legal department that says it is. It only has to stay legal until the court case is finalized in about 5 years. When it's declared illegal they will only get a small fine anyway.

Good idea. Much as Google is providing a useful service open source would be better. Internet search is a pretty hard problem but it can't be harder than building a Linux distribution and all the software it depends on.

OpenSolaris is Sun's desperate attempt to keep up with Linux. Sun had a great history but they just aren't as relevant anymore, there is little they have that redhat ( for example ) don't. Solaris just isn't in a position to make any kind of comeback at this point.
It's pretty sad that Linux has taken market share from good companies like Sun at least as much as Microsoft.
I've had fantastic luck with m0n0wall on a Soekris Net5501 box - The hardware was basically built for routing, switching and firewalling and m0n0wall is a great distribution.
The soekris net5501 machines are great hardware. I would not bother with m0n0wall though. OpenBSD gives you the full flexibility of a unix system and has a security record like no other.

Why on earth would a desktop user run FreeBSD instead of Linux, when it doesn't add a single feature available on Linux?
I'm not staying FreeBSD is better than Linux but FreeBSD is a more consistent system.
Linux, even with the best distributions, is a bunch of separate bits stuck together with 15 ways to do any given thing.
FreeBSD also does have some stuff Linux doesn't like PF, Jails, and better ZFS support.

Agreed, installing openbsd and packet filter has been on my to do list for years and I swear it is only the lack of time that prevented me to do so, I am still using Linux netfilter.
Linux is more multi-purpose (desktop for instance), has a wider audience hence more functionality available, a little like Windows;-))
P.S. No, I am not confusing freebsd and openbsd but I assume freebsd also has neat functionalities;-)
