Yes, per pound, muscle weighs more than fat... (please note the sarcasm)
People that should know better keep saying 'muscle weighs more than fat', It's obvious bull. What they mean is muscle weights more than fat PER UNIT OF VOLUME.
Everytime I exercise I gain weight, I started overweight about a year ago and am now 16 pounds heavier. I lost fat and gained muscle and I feel better for it.
Obsessing over weight is pointless as muscle is 3 times heavier per unit of volume than fat. BMI is a really stupid measure as it can't tell muscle from fat.
Yes, when video sites change, we can say goodbye to flash, because nobody uses Flash for navigation, casual online games, interactive information displays, or google maps street view...we have a long ways until we can say goodbye to Flash
Flash is a security nightmare and anything that reduces the amount of flash in the world can only be a good thing. Flash badly needs to be replaced with a good open standard and wiped out. But if that's not going to happen the next best thing is to reduce the amount of flash in the world.
IF MS (or some company like them) never existed chances are we'd be paying $5000 for our 286 machines exclusively sold by IBM. Or perhaps we'd paying $10000 for the newest mac model.
Or perhaps we would be paying about what we are paying now for something secure and reliable and about as fast.
All Microsoft did was make people believe that crashes and insecurity are normal and that computers can't really be trusted.
Microsoft is evil. Always has been. Always will be.
Maybe you're very young, but I seem to recall that Microsoft was at one time held as a sort of liberator from IBM's hegemony. I guess it's all a matter of perspective...
Your enemies enemy is not your friend.
Microsoft are and have always been a very bad thing for computing and everything that relies on computing. If they never existed we would likely be living in a far better world right now.
...he's coming across as dim witted and it raises serious doubts for me about his ability to perform his duties as a police officer, since he can't seem to understand the law.
What a shame this kid wasn't stopped by one of the vast majority of smart, intelligent, helpful, and caring police officers instead of an ignorant bully boy with a chip on his shoulder.
Sorry to give you sad news. Linux was created by student and not by scientist:P
Actually I don't see any difference. Both students and scientists want to learn new stuff. Science is about learning stuff not academic qualifications and not the pay packet.
My boss tells me a few years ago Intel didn't have paging in their chips. So instead of working out how to do it they flew people all over the world trying to convince the best and the brightest that paging just could not work and segmentation was a better solution. It was a fools errand and they failed. Good thing too or the whole IT world would be 2 or 3 decades behind right now.
Electric clothes dryers sold in the US routinely come without a power cord. Usually the receptacle is a NEMA 14-30R or a 10-30R for either 3 or 4 wires.
Typically you have to buy the cord separately and attach it to the rear of the dryer during installation.
It's only untrue if you take it out of context. I was replying to someone talking about how everything in the UK comes with a plug.
Then how is it that Americans created Mac OS X while a Finn created Linux?
A computer scientist created Mac OS X and a computer scientist created Linux. That fact that one is a Finnish and one is an American had nothing to do with it.
Lets not forget that the UK had to release a document covering injuries from cookies (biscuits). Seems half the nation has been injured by them at some point...
Stuff hasn't come with just bare wires for ages. I hesitate to suggest an actual number of years, because someone will come along and prove to me that there's one appliance left that still comes with bare wires for some odd reason or another, but I'll stick my neck out and say it's been well over a decade!
I think it's 15 to 20 years. I'm sure it was made illegal to sell domestic appliances without a plug. Manufactures used to sell things without plugs to cut costs and improve profits. The shops didn't mind because wiring plugs was a nice easy money spinner for them.
Even then plugs were totally standard the GP's claims that unwired plugs were due to there being a number of different plugs to choose from is total bull.
The article is from the U.K., so what do you expect? Brits have to find something to feel superior about despite having bad teeth and breath, even if they have to "look over" things like the U.S. grounding plug and GFI sockets.
You see this as some great attack on your national pride and just have to take revenge?
Hang your head in shame..
It's a report on plugs. Historical accident and nothing more decides what plugs are most used in your country.
The British people are strangely proud of the ungainly BS 1363 plug. No surprise at all that it won the comparison.
What is it with the Americans on here? The British people are not proud of their plugs, the British people take plugs for granted. It's not like there was a national vote on what plugs to use or anything.
To warp this into a issue of national pride is just wrong.
If I was writing a virus I'd want it to restart each time the machine boots and infect as many system and user binaries as possible. It might also be useful to be able to send raw data over the network rather than just using tcp sockets.
I have xubuntu running on a thinkpad R61i. It's been fine. All the hardware works. Full disk encryption works. Suspend and hibernate both work.
The only niggles I have are the firefox google box dropdowns are black on a dark gray background and therefore pretty hard to read and the battery monitor applet keeps disappearing.
Also, exercising makes me fucking hungry.
Me too, It's a normal thing. A protein bar or protein shake normally gets rid of that without too many calories.
Protein bars taste pretty good these days and are quick and convenient to eat. They are not cheap though.
Muscle weighs more than fat.

You are quite right but I feel the need to point out you don't need a gym or expensive equipment to get fit. There are some good books on fitness like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Solitary-Fitness-Charles-Bronson/dp/1844543099/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257753677&sr=8-1 and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-British-Army-Fitness-Guide/dp/085265118X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257753739&sr=8-3 as well as countless good dvd's. The real costs are the time and effort.
All the equipment you really need is some dumbbells, a mat, and a pair of trainers. If you already have a soft carpet you can skip the mat.

Less of a bad thing is still an improvement.

I'm being sarcastic.
How un-Nationalistic.What are you Metternich? Except instead of class we are based on our profession?
I've no idea what you are talking about.
I just don't believe that when Linus sat down and started writing Linux he did so to prove Finland was better than the rest of the world.
The same with OS X.
Sorry to give you sad news. Linux was created by student and not by scientist :P

I never buy Intel CPUs. For a very long time AMD have had equivalent technology at a much better price.
This is patently untrue.
Electric clothes dryers sold in the US routinely come without a power cord. Usually the receptacle is a NEMA 14-30R or a 10-30R for either 3 or 4 wires.

Perhaps you should go read the article.
The British people didn't all get together down the pub and write it. It does not represent their views.
And it's slashdot, nobody actually reads the articles.
Then how is it that Americans created Mac OS X while a Finn created Linux?

Fuse? Who needs that when the entire house is wired with circuit breakers. Fast enough to save your life if you drop the hairdryer into the bathtub.
Because the fuse trips at 2 to 13 amps and the circuit breaker will be way higher?
Lets not forget that the UK had to release a document covering injuries from cookies (biscuits). Seems half the nation has been injured by them at some point...
You mean http://www.rockybiscuit.co.uk/research.html ?
That's an advert not a serious report.
I was going to just copy and paste in my older post titled "The UK plug is the nanny state run wild", but I can't find the damned thing.
That doesn't make sense. The design and common usage of these plugs far predates the nanny state.
I don't think the state ever dictated what model of plug is allowed to become common in any case.
Stuff hasn't come with just bare wires for ages. Care to tell us what administrative functions...

I wonder when we in the Ubuntu/Kubuntu world will have a crisp beautiful and functional desktop by default.
Have you tried xubuntu? By default it's pretty ugly but it's easy enough to get rid of a taskbar and arrange things nicely.
I have xubuntu running on a thinkpad R61i. It's been fine. All the hardware works. Full disk encryption works. Suspend and hibernate both work.

Only simple minded idiots think Mac's dont get viruses.
Are you saying Macs running OS X can get viruses? Because it's obvious that Macs running windows can get them.
If you are saying OS X viruses exist can you give a few examples? I've never seen or heard of such a thing.
