I read the first article on the first linked site and I was impressed. I wouldn't have known it was generated by a computer. Even knowing that it was computer-generated, I'd still be happy with the quality for this kind of reporting. Very good.
The video in the linked story is really poor. What's the one thing you want to see in a video about a guy in an exoskeleton? You want to see him doing stuff. The video has a couple of quick shots of him punching and doing push-ups, and that's it. Poor.
Google can't complain about this until they stop the ridculous blocking of YouTube content on certain devices. I have an Android phone and around 1 in 3 videos I try to view on YouTube have a "not available on mobiles" error message.
I would guess that this is a 'security' option given to video uploaders. But why? Why allow someone to watch a video on their desktop or laptop, but not on their mobile? Much is made of having YouTube "built in" to mobiles, so why hold back progress by making the mobile world off-limits for certain content?
In 25 years of computing, the only virus I've ever had was due to an Adobe Reader exploit. So, thank you Adobe for hurrying to get this patch out urgently. I'm sure there is no conceivable way you could get it out in less than 2 weeks.
In the meantime I should remove Reader from my system.
Telephone invented: 1876 (Alexander Graham Bell) Cellphone concept: 1915 (American Telephone and Telegraph) Cellphone invented: 1973 (Motorola)
Looking at those dates, it doesn't seem out-of-the-question that some kind of wireless telephone could have been around by 1928, albeit not used by the public. I'm sure there are technologies currently in use by our security services, law enforcement agencies, etc, that won't reach the public market for many years. And I'm sure the same was happening back in 1928.
Perhaps the person in the video was, for example, a detective following someone and reporting their whereabouts. Less exciting that a time traveler, alien or some kind of covert military "black ops" explanation. But an explanation all the same.
Why should they change because of disdain from non-customers?
Just FYI, I was an Apple customer. Had an iPhone 3G and then a 3GS. Because of Apple's actions that hurt developers, I got rid of my Apple phone and bought an Android handset. So I'm one example of an Apple customer actively moving to a different manufacturer, solely because of Apple's anti-developer actions. In a world of 6 billion people, I wonder if I'm the only one?
If Apple had been nicer to developers, I'd have bought an iPad by now.
1996? Really? I can remember using this technique on a web site for my Quake add-on levels in 1997 (the year after Quake came out) and I didn't think I was an early adopter of javascript, far from it.
Just Wiki'd it though and you're right. Wow. Look at me being all 1337 and I didn't even know it.
Surely this "idea" was invented by the people who created the part of javascript that allowed img src to be changed at will and re-rendered instantly? Just because Random Person was the first to deploy the technique, that does't mean Random Person invented it.
I'm not an open source zealot, don't use Linux, have no particular dislike for Microsoft, but Office hasn't really been on my radar for a long time. I used Word for years, but when I got a new computer a few years ago it didn't come with Office installed so I downloaded OpenOffice to see what it was like. Never went back -- there didn't seem to be any point. I'm sure there are many, many things that Microsoft Word, Excel etc can do that OpenOffice Writer, Calc etc can't do, but personally I've never hit that hurdle. Office may still be required for some business tasks, but for my own business and personal use, OpenOffice will do me fine. Thank you to the wonderful people that made it and released it for free!
I hate the logos that TV stations put in the corner of the screen throughout shows. So I stopped watching TV three years ago.
The high number of adverts in each show was becoming a problem, but the logos annoyed me more. Now, since I've stopped watching TV because of the logos, the adverts don't bother me. Funny that.
When it gets to the point that hour-long shows have half-an-hour of interactive adverts that you MUST watch or they play again, that won't bother me. Because I still won't be watching TV.
I have so much more time to be productive since I quit the tube.

Would he have received the same sentence if he had hacked the email of a random neighbour?

"revealed last week"
"emergency fix"
"Thursday"
Citation?
Then i came by and pissed on Optimus Prime. "Hey, free urine!"
You pissed on Optimus? Oooh, "urine" trouble now.
He would KICK ASS... with a cool voice.
Then a tow truck came by and said, "Hey, free taxi!"
Then Optimus Prime came by and said, "Longarm? Are you free?"
"Is he actually clueless about the issue"
I'm sure the number of relevant issues that Carmack is ignorant about could be counted on no hands.
...and her life had exactly the same value as yours.

"obviously I'm a fucking retard as well"
Why "as well"? Timoth was right, you were wrong and presumptious. It was just you.
"Maybe I should apply for a job as a slashdot editor"
Based on the editor getting something right and you getting it wrong?
... but still dead.

70mpg sounds good. But is it a huge leap forward? I have a 4-year-old Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2-litre turbo diesel and I get 66mpg cruising.
What a fascinating read that was! Haven't got mod points, so all I can do is say thank you. So thank you!

knock-off cartoon
Superbly executed knock-off cartoon, if you please.

Well done to whoever marked this as troll. I was trying to be a whiny bitch!
