    back to topic ... i do think the implications of microsoft outsourcing code would be huge, mainly helping companies like Sun and IBM. I am a fan of FSF and all, but I'm not sure it's in our nation's best interests to use something that as untrustable as GNU/Linux. But who is to say that Solaris or AIX is?

    Though let me tell you, for the time being it can make life fairly complicated. I had been programming with FreeBSD/BeOS/Linux (all GNU/Posix stuff) since in high school, but my third year in college I landed an internship doing Windows client programming. I could've easily worked with the engineers doing C/firmware stuff, but instead they had the need for client coders, so there I sat learning MFC. It will take a while for the lead developers at most locations to be willing to code in UNIX, not to mention, you have to provide your product for the platform that your customer wants.

    i think that it is stupid to just download an app to the desktop and install some rpm (or similar), that is not the linux 'way' at all. has all the fs/oss ranting tought you all nothing? you should be wanting to do this:
    $ tar -xzf appname.tar.gz
    $ cd appname
    $ ./configure
    $ make
    $ sudo make install
    (zipping format issues aside for moment)

    if you trully care about the app in question that is what you will want to do. all of the other various apps will likely be installed as part of the base system, but to go out and download an app that should be the recommended procedure.

    having the source is what drove me to linux in the first place, and this was redhat 5.2 days. my video card didn't work with X11, but that didn't matter, i had access to source which was way better than with Windows.

    There is one other thing about the production of ethanol from corn that many people do not know. The waste products that result from this procedure are not trully waste. [sarcasm]"Here you go Bob, take this syrupy wood mash and burn it in your stove, mmk."[/sarcasm]
    Also, the glutton does not have to be trucked very far usually, so it puts a lot of truckers to work around the Dakotas. This seems like a very efficient use of corn.
