"GreenDisk Will accept by mail (for a small fee) all forms of electronic media â" including CDs and DVDs -- for recycling. Fee goes to pay labor fees for processing."
There is no recycle program for CDs/etc in any city I've ever lived in...so I'm going to spend MORE money to send the media to them to be recycled, when I'm already being overcharged for renting/buying it?
I am wondering...if a manufacturer comes up with a new scheme to protect CD/DVDs, and tries to patent the process, isn't it in the public domain then? Don't they have to release the details of the process (which of course allows it to be cracked almost immediately)?
"It doesn't mean the publisher is mandated to make it easy for you to make said copies"
It does, however, mean that it has to be *possible* to do so - and not for technophiles only, but for the main mass of people. They are trying to make it impossible, which is a violation of fair use.
I do that with every single CD/DVD I buy, then store the copies in my firebox. Otherwise I'd lose them to scratches/whatever eventually, which is wasting money, to me...and money is hard enough to come by.
RTA. This behavior wasn't shown by them until a new group of penguins was introduced to the pool. It's apparently some kind of "copycat" behavior.
Although I agree with you about strange primate behavior:-) Some of them even sit and stare at moving images on electronic devices for hours at a time...
bog! Is that law or simply the insurance companies idea of self-protection? That's nuts.
If I lived there I'd be screaming to high heaven. Anyone lobbying against that kind of idiocy? I mean, college students are among the renters who *most need* renters insurance.... Sigh....I feel for you Ontarians....
and what's really odd is how quiet MS has been on this whole issue....hmmm....
Mayhaps MS knows that if they continue to publicly attack Linux they will dig themselves in deeper, so they've hired/funded a proxy to do it for them *wink wink*

You know, that's a good point. I'm sure the checks will be mailed 4th class or something similar bulk, which I don't believe gets forwarded. I just moved a month ago myself. Hmph.
Insure your music collection, man. I don't know what the rates/offerings are now (I don't collect like I used to) but in 1987 when I went to college and had a large portion of my LP collection stolen, I collected several grand from insurance. A lot of that wasn't replaceable, but at least I wasn't out so much...renters/homeowners insurance is your friend.
Yeah, sometimes Slashdot has an impact either than on bandwidth costs...
I'm donating my 13 sawbucks to this poor kids fund. I just hope that it doesn't get sucked up by the RIAA or the legal system.
Bastards...
But, as of 17:51 here's this post from Chewplastic:
"Thanks to the many generous people that have donated, I have recovered over 83% of my money lost to the RIAA. "
Whee! We CAN make a difference!

Money, zogger, money. That's the real reason the Feds don't want to change the laws. I mean, think of all the unemployed DEA agents......ah, ok, probably the real reason the F. doesn't want to legalize weed is it would invalidate all this BS they've been feeding the public for decades, and we all know how the gov hates to have egg on their faces. Hmph.
Now lots of cops I've met, especially in small towns, would like to see maryjane off the books. It'd give them more time to go after more serious stuff.
Agreed. However, methane has infrastructure rel. to distribution and also emissions problems that are worse. Plus production as relates to agriculture has NIMBY probs.
Bottom line is, there will never be a tech that can satisfy all the enviros. There will always be someone who complains. Sigh.

True, but they are massively abused. Such as in the instance of not being able to read the EULA before purchase/update/download....*cough*MS*cough
